Well this mode was a little more work than I initially thought, but it worth it in my opinion. Hopefully this will help those who are looking to do the same.

The first thing you will need is the seat rails and under trey from the S model. I got mine off of ebay for about 180 dollars. You will also need to purchase the S model seat release cable.

http://i429.photobucket.com/albums/qq19/turf2/46bd_1.jpg?t=1238365713

The seat rails will not fit on the Ss without modification, so there are two solutions to this problem.
The first of witch is to have a adapter made similar to this one which is courtesy of AnderSTA from BuellXB. The advantage of this setup is that there is no need to modify the seat rails, and you will not have modify the seat latter in the mod.

AndreSTA adapter

http://i429.photobucket.com/albums/qq19/turf2/album_pic.jpg?t=1238365800

This is what it is correcting

http://i429.photobucket.com/albums/qq19/turf2/album_pic-1.jpg?t=1238365934

http://i429.photobucket.com/albums/qq19/turf2/album_pic-2.jpg?t=1238365967

This is what I had done. The advantage to this setup is it is stronger and cleaner looking, but you will have to modify your seat later in the mod.

I went to a fabricator and had him modify the top of the rail and add a spacer were the bottom attaches to the frame.

http://i429.photobucket.com/albums/qq19/turf2/IMG_1950.jpg?t=1238366041

http://i429.photobucket.com/albums/qq19/turf2/IMG_1956.jpg?t=1238366071

Once your seat rails fit properly you will have to modify your under tray to make room for the rear shock, because of this you will also have to move your battery forward by cutting the metal tray the battery sits in so that it forms a tab that pushes the battery forward.

http://i429.photobucket.com/albums/qq19/turf2/IMG_1954.jpg?t=1238366179

I also recommend rotating the rear shock 180 degrees so that the shock reservoir rests on the left side of the bike instead of the right.

Stock location before rotation

http://i429.photobucket.com/albums/qq19/turf2/IMG_1951.jpg?t=1238366372

after rotation

http://i429.photobucket.com/albums/qq19/turf2/IMG_1952.jpg?t=1238366409

this will allow you to put the shock reservoir next to the battery and out of the way.

http://i429.photobucket.com/albums/qq19/turf2/IMG_1953.jpg?t=1238366471

I also had to modify/shorten the other metal bracket so it would fit.
Here is a few pictures of what the tail section looks like with everything put together.

http://i429.photobucket.com/albums/qq19/turf2/IMG_1959.jpg?t=1238366498

http://i429.photobucket.com/albums/qq19/turf2/IMG_1961.jpg?t=1238366557

I had to make an extension out of steel for this ground wire

http://i429.photobucket.com/albums/qq19/turf2/IMG_1958.jpg?t=1238366596

Now that everything fits you can put your seat on if you went with the first option for the seat rails. If you did what I did than you will have to add a tab for the seat like the Ss seat has so the front of the seat will lay flush with the tank.

http://i429.photobucket.com/albums/qq19/turf2/IMG_1966.jpg?t=1238366635

S seat left, Ss seat right

Amazing! [up]

nitto12ss
03-29-2009, 10:57 PM
You will also have to shave some plastic from the under tray so the other tab on the S seat can slide in without problems.

http://i429.photobucket.com/albums/qq19/turf2/IMG_1961-1.jpg?t=1238367096

Lastly you will need to fabricate a bracket for the rear brake reservoir.

Thats about it, now you just need to paint or powder coat everything so it looks nice.

This is the end result

Thanks Steven, that's what I was shooting for. Informative and easy to follow write-ups by other members have allowed me to do so many things to my bike worry free, so this is my way to pay them back.

Nothing is more of a tease than posting a mod without explaining what it took to accomplish it. :(

sorry, I was ranting a bit. :D

Have you done the breather hose reroute? That will help with your 2000-2500 rpm problem.

Also, is that a helmet lock on the swingarm? If so, where did you get it and how does it attach?

nitto12ss
03-30-2009, 12:53 PM
03Firebolt9R, Yes I have done the breather reroute. The problem is I did The Tail swap, the breather reroute and fitted steering damper all at the same time, so I am having a hard time figuring out what is causing the problem.

Also, where can I get a front end "gas mask" like that?

Stevenc150
04-03-2009, 04:23 PM
It's an Avon gas mask that can be found on Ebay. About 1/2 down this thread page, Typeone who had the same, talks about fitment on his bike and gives a brief explanation: '05 Buell XB12S (http://www.buellxb.com/Buell-XB-Forum/Users-Bikes/my-05-Buell-XB12S..-./3)

So is there anything that you would do differently a second time to make it go smoother, etc.? I just purchased a set of s rails and the under tray and a crumby seat that i can use the pan to fiberglass a fighter seat on. I already have subframe spacers that will fill the gap and hopefully the covers will line up. Did you have any difficulties fitting everything under the seat?

nitto12ss
06-03-2009, 02:42 PM
Sorry boltt01, I haven't looked at this thread for a while. The only problem/setback I ran into was the seat release cable. The S cable is about 4" longer than the Ss so I had to order one. As for fitting everything under the seat it requires you to get a little creative, but everything I did was mentioned above. Hope that helps and sorry it took a month to get back to you [smirk]

Do you (or anyone else for that matter) know where i can get those adapter pieces for the rails?
Also, did you find the problem that caused the 2000-2500rpm issue?
Hope you still come on this forum, and even more so see this post.

AndreSTA made the adapter for his bike, but I found that is was easier for me to have the frame rails modified by a local fabricator.

The RPM issue turned out to caused by the way I had mounted the steering damper. I had it mounted to the front isolator bolt and for what ever reason at that rpm range it caused the bike to vibrate like crazy. I have a different damper now so all is well.

I have not updated the pics in this tread so here are a few.

Anyone thought of something like this I think there is enough meat on there to slot it out a bit. Plus if you ever wanted to reverse is you could, just use the new hardware. Also I forgot to draw in the 5mm spacer between the mount and the new S rail. Anyone possibly with a totaled frame willing to spend a little time and try this or anyone who is just plain nuts?http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/4087_20100913134647_L.jpg

bajamxr77
09-15-2010, 03:05 PM
crxtasy169, I think that could work! I am not at home with my bike right now so I can't put my eye on it, but from Nitto's pics on the last page, it does look like there is enough on that nub to slot it. It doesn't look like it needs much. Do you think with the slot and spacer on the bottom, the top will bolt up correctly? Would you be able to tighten the bottom enough to keep it solid, (no play)?

bajamxr77
09-15-2010, 03:06 PM
Oh yeah, my other rail shipped today! All I need is the trunk pan!!

crxtasy169
09-15-2010, 06:26 PM
Yeah I think it will stay tight especially if you use a little medium locktight. Yeah the top will bolt up for sure. What I would do is bolt the top in and then mark how much needs to be ground away to slot it out, that way there is absolutely no mistake with how much you grind out.

bajamxr77
09-18-2010, 05:07 AM
I think that will work. I am anxious to get a closer look at the frame nub when I, get the trunk pan and break the bike down. If it looks like there is enough room for the slot I am going to try it. I will post pics whenever that happens. How about you? Got all your parts? Ready to give it a go? If you try it first , please post. Again, thanks for the great idea.

crxtasy169
09-18-2010, 08:40 AM
All you have to do to get a better look at it is pull the bottom two bolts and lift the tail to see the two mount tabs I did this the other night and it was easy to see. I took a couple measurements and it looks like it will work, the only part that worries me is the thickness of the mount at the back it actually tapers from the outside to the inside. But then again with the measurements I think it will be ok as long as you have a steady hand and a good method for slotting it out! Don't forget the 5mm spacer!

Did this mod this last spring while I was waiting for the weather to change. Very simple once you figure out the lower frame rail. I did not have to do any modifaction (it's coming this winter though..) because I have the trojan sub frame spacers that I had installed on the bike. The spacer fits the gap perfectly and rotates the tail upward making the difference less radical. However the spacer covers do not line up perfectly now so they will get tended to this winter. What you will need for the build is the s rails, undertray, s seat latch cable, s battery tray, and seat of choice, personally went with the scg seat because I'm only 5'9 and the tail lift does give it a little more altitude..

Another advantage the sub frame spacers gave me on this mod was that I was not forced to notch the undertray and battery tray for clearance. Other than the covers not lining up perfectly in was a simple bolt on mod. Once I had the parts it just took an afternoon. You will have to get very creative to get everything in, but that's the hardest part.

Agree with above, not my idea to have the jacked up look. Just not for me. Going the 12sx seat as the SCG is just too thin and we have some long kilometres (miles for you guys) to cover.
As for parts being chased by the above (btw Baja - did you order form ASB?)

blott01, your bike looks good, but as with the others I am not going for the high tail look, trying to keep it as low as possible, but good info none the less and thanks for the pics. The aluminum grips are tough! Wolf you presume correctly, I did order all my parts from ASB several months back. I have been working with AL. He has been great on keeping me posted on availability. To date, I have everything except the plastic trunk pan. ASB assures me it is to come. crxtasy169, I am planning to go your route when I get the parts. So far it looks like the best and simplest plan. Honestly probably won't have the time until later in Nov. Hopefully I will have the trunk pan by then. I started my S conversion last night, got the bike torn down and kickin around the idea of JB welding some aluminum bolts into upper frame holes, cutting off smooth, drill and tap where I need to be. Has anyone tried this? It looks like there is enough meat on the frame to relocate the hole a tiny bit. I am going to try using frame spacers first because I want the jacked up tail look and hopefully Monday I can upload some pics.

I realised the spacer would cuase a different look, the jacked up style, hence why i have opted for the welding the arms to suit. Make it look stock like the pics at the start of this thread.

So using spacers instead of modifying frame or rails worked ok?
I'm starting to consider this but I don't want to do anything permanent to my frame. Also don't want to make it any harder to flatfoot.

quote]So using spacers[/quote] I'm still waiting on a few little details, (rear master reservior, seat lacth cable) then tear down and paint. When I reassemble I will document my changes with pics and post. Yes, the spacers worked perfect and I used steel stock that makes up the difference in the gap at the bottom of the rails. I used the SCG seat because I like the look of it and my feet are actually coser to the ground now than with the original ss tail. And I'm only 5'9". Have'nt rode it yet, but it does seem to change my position a little more forward on the bike.

Question:
is the Rear brake reservior from the S actually needed or can the SS be used?

I have a favor to ask any "S" owners. Can any of you measure the rear shock reservior hose from center to center of the banjos? The ss bikes have a short hose that puts the reservior on top of the wire harness when converting to a short tail and is too cramped for long term. I can assume harness damage will result from vibration and heat. The longer s hose is not avialiable by itself, but I found a shop that can make a hose and recharge the nitrogen, it would be helpfull to have an exact length to look clean and original.

Here is my work in progress

http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/8657_20110216053911_L.jpg

spacers at the bottom of subframe create clearance for rear shock

http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/8657_20110216053820_L.jpg

But now I got an ungly space/gap. Thinking of sheet metal "cover" that would slide over side rail attached by and only showing upper bolt

UPDATE (sort of): well i've been out of action for 13 weeks now, massive operation on my foot (instead of my ride :D ), but never the less, the mod went ahead so i've been told.
I have a very good mechanic friend who has worked on this when he had time, and told me it should be ready very soon. He's taken notes, pictures, and even video (i think) of what and how he's done it.
So fingers crossed, i will have a pimped out XB with a short ass and a very, VERY, happy rider.

It helps alot to have a shop lengthen the rear shock resivior hose to mount it where it belongs on the s tail. The seat will latch fine with no need to alter tabs or latch position and the spacing in perfect at the airbox cover. I had mine done 11 5/8" center to center. if anybody wants pics I can post them, otherwise, I've been too happy riding this thing!

So my XB is in the final stages of some mods. Had a smallllll glimpse, and then the drool got in the way. Anyways, was hoping to have the Buellfighter yesterday (friday) for an annual ride with some friends. No joy, didn't want to rush it, so looked hiring a bike for the day. My mechanic guru (Doug) said not to hire, i can borrow his 1125CR while he worked on mine. Hot Damn!!!... other than some tiny quibbles, i friggin loved it! As soon as i got on, sweeeet as a cherry. Easy to ride, even easier than my XB. Slipper clutch is the best thing ever made, WHAT a difference. I will admit, very dangerous for me.... way to easy to lose a licence on this badboy. And then some!
As for my bike, we have an ETA of next Saturday. Not getting my hopes up too much, but oh wo sweet if i get back by next weekend.
Q: what is the standard nitrogen pressure in the rear shock set at please?

First off, as said before, many, many thanks to Nitto for the inspiring idea and thread!
Here are a few pics from my tail swap. Everything went back into the S tail well. I even had room for a little padding between the battery and the shock reservoir. A few things went different then I had expected: I did not end up needing to modify the S trunk pan or battery pan for rear shock clearance. On my bike the clearance is minimal but sufficiant even when the suspension is compressed. I also didn't end up needing the 5mm spacers at the bottom. The rails mated to the frame flush when fitted to the trunk pan. Lastly I did not have to extend the ground cable from the fuse box. I am guessing the differences on these things were due to the machining process and how the rails ultimately ended up. Another thing to note: after the rails were machined I had them rhinoed, which threw off the way the parts fit together due to the thickness of the coating. This required some sanding and shaping to make them to fit properly. I also had to raise the seat latch up 3/16" with washers to get it to catch the hook on the bottom of the seat.

http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/7045_20111027035358_L.jpg

I ended up cutting the fuse box holder/seat latch mount bracket in two and trimming off the plastic nubbin on the S trunk pan so everything would lay flush. However I would recommend, to anyone doing this mod, go ahead and order the mount for the S model. I made a bracket for the SS rear brake reservoir but I would also recommend ordering the S model brake reservoir, eliminating the need for fabbing a new bracket.

Bracket

Nubbin, hard to see in this pic, but it is tiny and in front of the part that supports the seat latch.

Decided to bring back this old thread because it is kind of a brain storm on how to do this mod and was really usefull to me doing the S tail conversion

maybe someone did the same as i but i didnt saw it on line yet so here it goes

http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/12522_20150201135447_L.jpg
to solve this problem i decided to go with a no turning back solution

http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/12522_20150201135527_L.jpg
all i need was this: Metal repair paste, 22x5mm spacers, 3/16 UNC tap, 1/4 inch longer bolts, 6,5mm pre-tap drill and a 8,5mm pointing and spacer offset drill (sorry i´m in the metric system :)

http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/12522_20150201135627_L.jpg
filled the existing thread hole

http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/12522_20150201135748_L.jpg
fitted the spacers and with the subframe in place using the 8,5mm drill pointed out where the new holes should be and used the same drill to overpass the spacers

drill the frame with the 6,5mm drill and tap it in the new spot

http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/12522_20150201135916_L.jpg
where magic or bull**** hapends :)

http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/12522_20150201140012_L.jpg
and ready for test ride!

If you need a SS/STT complete subframe i need your money... :)

Well this mode was a little more work than I initially thought, but it worth it in my opinion. Hopefully this will help those who are looking to do the same.

The first thing you will need is the seat rails and under trey from the S model. I got mine off of ebay for about 180 dollars. You will also need to purchase the S model seat release cable.

http://i429.photobucket.com/albums/qq19/turf2/46bd_1.jpg?t=1238365713

The seat rails will not fit on the Ss without modification, so there are two solutions to this problem.
The first of witch is to have a adapter made similar to this one which is courtesy of AnderSTA from BuellXB. The advantage of this setup is that there is no need to modify the seat rails, and you will not have modify the seat latter in the mod.

AndreSTA adapter

http://i429.photobucket.com/albums/qq19/turf2/album_pic.jpg?t=1238365800

This is what it is correcting

http://i429.photobucket.com/albums/qq19/turf2/album_pic-1.jpg?t=1238365934

http://i429.photobucket.com/albums/qq19/turf2/album_pic-2.jpg?t=1238365967

This is what I had done. The advantage to this setup is it is stronger and cleaner looking, but you will have to modify your seat later in the mod.

I went to a fabricator and had him modify the top of the rail and add a spacer were the bottom attaches to the frame.

http://i429.photobucket.com/albums/qq19/turf2/IMG_1950.jpg?t=1238366041

http://i429.photobucket.com/albums/qq19/turf2/IMG_1956.jpg?t=1238366071

Once your seat rails fit properly you will have to modify your under tray to make room for the rear shock, because of this you will also have to move your battery forward by cutting the metal tray the battery sits in so that it forms a tab that pushes the battery forward.

http://i429.photobucket.com/albums/qq19/turf2/IMG_1954.jpg?t=1238366179

Yes you will need the under tray and battery tray/holder and thats it so its the 4 things you need, 1. L/H seat rail, 2. R/H seat rail, 3. plastic under tray, and 4. the metal battery tray then its a case of take your time and do a practice assembly before you start cutting stuff up! If you need anymore help give me a shout on here or pm me i dont mind, good luck! :eagerness: sorry what do you mean by "adaptor"?

It's photobucket not your settings on the forum. Photobucket now charges to host your pics.

I just finished putting a firebolt tail on an ss. Was pretty easy. Minor welding /drilling/ thread tapping. It's a solo bike so I put the pcm and other electronics under the rear cowl were the seat would go.

My friend laid his ss down on the dragon so repairs were needed and the bolt parts were readily available at a good price.
