Was wondering what you guys have gotten out of your bikes at the drag strip? Year, model, engine?

I have a 2003 Buell XB9r and was wondering what I might be able to achieve out of it. I know a lot of a bikes time has to do with the rider but just curious on what others have gotten.

Hi, I have a '07 Buell xb12r, best time so far is a 12.12 @ 110 mph. I don't have my slips here, but I think my best light was a 121. Hoping I can break into the high 11's with some "rider" improvement[up]

Wow, I have been gone for a week and so far there have been 121 hits on this post but yet only one reply??????????? Is it that all of you have never run at the track? Or are you ashamed by your times?

I have yet to run but given the fact I have only had my bike for 2 weeks and was gone for one..... But none the less I hope to have a slip up soon.

Also was wondering if you need your cycle endorsement at the strip or if a paper license will do the job as long as you have the proper gear?

I got my Buell XB12R about two weeks ago as well. I do wanna take it out to the track after I break in the bike a little more but until then I am also curious on seeing some more drag times.

I hit the track and was turning 1:57:?? and hitting the 130+ range (indicated)on long straights does that help??

That's more road racing than the drags.

Personally, I race a 1980 Firebird I've been building for the last 12 years. I have no inclination to put the Ulysses on the track.

Mororcyclist magazine ran a 1200 Buell Lightning (2004) at 11.37 @ 117MPH

Well was going to go to the strip tonight but my buddy didnt get his fuel pump on his GTO (newer body) had to upgrade for the twin turbo setup. But we will be going Friday, knock on wood. So hopefully I can pull maybe a 12.5 pass at about 110 out of my ass, but we will see.

Good luck xlow, The only track time that I know of where I'm at in Oklahoma City is a run what you brung night some where south west of the city. I believe it is the first Friday of the month so I'll let you know in a week in a half what happened.

You had a ****-load of hits and no posts because we all know our bikes are built for corners, not straight lines. I have a 72' Kaw H2 750 that'll eat any streetable Buell in a 1/4 mile with low 9's. If you want to be taken seriously, learn to turn!

xtremelow
06-28-2007, 09:02 PM
I can turn but that doesn't mean a Buell cant run a 1/4 mile. Or is there some type of law were a good handling bike/car/truck cant run a quarter? I am pretty sure even a high end sports cars that is built to corner such as a Vette, Lambo, etc. still run on the strip for fun, but I could be mistaken. And in turn if a bike has no power it isn't **** in-between turns. Unless you know a place that is never ending turns and no straight aways?

I guess I am just curious on the times and I really dont need bashing.

I like to think of my Buell as a muscle car on two wheels. I love burning up a straight away with all this low end power. I like a good twisty every now and again, but I am more hesitant now that I saw what happened to BuellPartsGuy on the 'Bad Accident' thread.

I am interested to know the 0-60, 0-100 and 0-120 mph on a XB12.

went to my local drag strip last night with my 07 xb12r (k&n, race ecm, pipe). i was dissapointed, i wish i didnt know how fast it was..lol. i ran a 12.53 @ 109mph. my girl beat me on her 07 zx-6r with a 12.33 @ 114mph. talk about emabarasing. go and lose to your girlfriend. so uh is NOS an option with these bikes?

Of course it is....but why do that? You were able to hang with an inline superbike, on an air cooled V-Twin!!! Thats respectable. What were your 1/8 mile times? Curious to see if you beat her there.

keisersozae

i did. i had her beat at the 1/8th and 1000 ft. i dont have my slips in front of me but my 1/8th mile times were in the 8's. thats the first time i have driven a bike down the track so need some practice too.

My best 60ft is a 1.90. i can lunch my bike so hard it freaks guy out at the track (because of the short wheel base). My problem is leaning out but i am working on that right now. No top end pull now.

wow old thread,

Posted my best on another thread but was:

Almost 2 years ago i ran a 12.03 at 112mph with a 1.98 60ft. Had the whole airbox and filter OFF on a cold night running 110 race gas.

Ran it a couple weeks ago with 93 octane, and entire filter and air box ON and my best run was 12.32 at 110mph and a 2.03 60ft.

Ok, can someone help me here. I've seen U-Tube videos of Buell's getting off the line and they sound like they're sorta bogging it out of the hole. When I road raced (125GP and BOTT) when the light goes green I pinned the throttle and feathered the clutch till it was all the way out, at that point I'm topped out in first , bang secong and I'm gone. Am I missing something here? Wayne

i have a 04 xb12R and i usually run about 11.90s with it... once in a while an 89 or 88... i have open air box tuned with ecm spy on a buddys dyno and then a Latus pipe... works pretty good and the latus is by far the best sounding pipe out there...

anywho... i have a buddy that lives right here in town with a 2003 xb9s kinda customed out with pretty much the same mods as my 12, same pipe open air box and ecm spy and he can actually keep up with my 12 no problem.... once in a while i even get beat... in my opinion the 9's are pretty much just as fast as the 12's a little more grunt and thats about it and once there tuned there pretty much even cause the 9 revs higher and quicker...

Well I will start off by saying the bike is a 2003 XB9r. It has the race kit and that is it for performance. I weigh in at 180, and with the bike we totall out a 630 lbs, and that is with 1 gallon of fuel. Also I was running 110 octane temp was 65 deg.
Best.

thats how best times are achieved on street bikes ,, on the gas as soon as possible just above the bog point or slight bog...watch how some of these paid factory riders get numbers for vmax or busa v65 or any bike ...like they bogged out of the hole with no tire spin....need close to 100 hp to run low 11.s

I hope tou guys arent buming out on those low 12 times,as the are pretty good considering there coming out of a air cooled v twin with epa legal cams, and covered with all the street legal gadgets.Another thing to consider is when motorcycle mags do quarter mile tests, its not done in the methods of the past.they used to use a small rider like pee wee gleason and take a trip to a drag strip an let him do run after run until the best time or sometimes 3best times were achieved, and publish it.Here in the gadget age ,they use instruments, bike mounted and calibrated to final drive ratio, and triggered by the speedo send ing pulse.there is no reaction time involved,no light,so the et is reflecting the performance of the bike with the lightest rider they can mount on it.the 750 kaw triple ,stock, ran in the low 12s ,but was the only street legal production bike to do so for ten straight years.Dont worry be happy, and happy holidays

My best 0 to 60 times came on my hot rod sportster,by holding enough throttle to have about 3500,simultaneously dumping clutch and twisting to max throttle as bike got under load.Slow on throttle you will bog,to quick and you might get out of shape a little or the tire will come up a little. With all these possibilities ,my times were varied by no more than 2 tenths in the quarter. You find the sweet spot by repeating. The og clutch is still fine.

I have an 08 12R. I've been to the strip on it once, I ran a 12.04 at 114, and a 12.05@115. Both runs my 60' was over 2.5 seconds, horrible launches. This was also my first time at the strip running through the lights. Normally it was run what you brung with a street racing style start(still at the strip).

This is a vid of my run @114 I believe. I am on the inside, 05 R6 in the outside. Unfortubately my buddy in the vid was right, I didn't have the top end.

Thanks for the drag race coverage.I went to motorcyclistonline and there quarter mile test seems to have been done on rolling chassis dyno.So actual wind resistence could be missing from there et calculations.I dont think your et is far from what should be expected and your 60'is fine from what is visable.I found at least with my sportster, gear shifts after 6000 but before the rev limiter got better results. Also,A couple local guys were running 8th miles at irwindale on thurs nights, there ets and speeds improved with a 30 tooth aluminum counter shaft pulley.Im not sugesting you do this with the buell as your first gear is almost the same as that already. It does tell me the power charecteristics of the motor ,favor using its torque as soon as possible, via load. For example With taller gearing and 18 inch rear wheel on the sportster,I could finish a quarter mile at the top of third, or the bottom of fourth.Bottom of fourth added 2 mph, and brought et down from 12.3 to 12.1. So you might want to experament.Hope Ive been helpfull, not techninally boreing.

Yeah the launch was definitely not there. Sounded like you kinda let out the clutch then started revving it up?

Best launch I can do is to hold it at 2500, the while I'm releasing the clutch raise the rpm to somewhere past 3000 and work the clutch to keep the tire down while on my way to full throttle, this all happens in 1-2 seconds (which should be your 60ft time) I launch so hard now that I'm starting to loose traction. Been told my tire will spin half a turn before it completely gets going, and the scratches in the tire proves this. Has anyone here dropped air pressure to help the launch? If so what psi?

On my old ZRX1200R I got to make one free pass down Fomoso track on a hot summer night. Lost the timeslip long ago but I remember my reaction time was .49! I was watching the other guy. Trap speed was 125 and I think it was 11.50 seconds at the quarter. Dont remember any of the other times.

I ran my 09 1125cr at firebird raceway in chandler AZ oct 16th 09 about 2 weeks after I bought it... maybe had 400 miles on it bone stock with a FMF slip on and a K&N air filter... no tune... First pass(only pass):
r/t-.501
60 -1.835
330-4.781
1/8-7.121
mph-106.41
1000-9.149
1/4 - 10.889
mph-128.01

they kicked me off the track for exceding 120mph w/o a full leather suit... :(

Also It was my first run and I was jittery... the guy next to me rolled up first and staged both lights right away so I felt rushed... I rolled up and also set up both lights... left my F-ing visor up! took off and could not keep the front wheel down thru first or second gear... had to keep getting out of it, then end of second I realized the visor was up so I was doing a face slap move to try to close it w/o letting off... finally got it most of the way down and the wind snapped it shut but I was not really concentrating on good shift points....
I think I could break into the 9's with some practice and now that I have a tuner.. may need to get a strap?
First thing is to get a suit as I want to do road track days anyways... Pricey thou!

I read a great article about a road race guy,Vance breese, who used to race here in the clubs I did.The article was really about his Iron horse sportster . It was converted to 79'' via cast aluminum cylinders, made by a guy named sputhe.John ulrich and staff, went to o.c.i.r. The bike had the stock 4 speed trans it came with.the bike dynoed over 100 at rear wheel and was geared for 160 top speed. The could not get out of 11s until launching in 2nd gear.Has any one tried this yet?

xtreme6669
12-31-2009, 05:12 AM
I can't see any good coming from a 2nd gear launch!

buelladdicted
12-31-2009, 11:56 PM
I dont think your 1125r would benefit from a second gear launch either. You have a motor thats over square, revs at least 3000 rpms higher, has a 6 speed trans. But a 1200 air cooled under square buell just might. Not having the place to run a quarter mile unless driveing way north anymore,And since I just gave an example of how it was an advantage for the bike I wrote about,Im curious.

xtreme6669
01-01-2010, 12:39 AM
It works great for motocross starts but in that situation its controlled tire spin.... at the drag track you want no spin. Do you have a link to the article? I would like to read more about that?

im taking mine to the track next weekend. what should i set the suspension at? any other advise?

anrkizm95
09-28-2010, 04:04 PM
depends on your weight, track temp, air pressure and how you launch.i set mine real soft in the rear no adjustment to the front and had my tire pressure around 28-30 rear came off the line at around 4300 rpm laying over the air box and quite a bit of force on the front end.carried the front wheel 1st and 2nd shifted at about 6800 rpm.and ran a 11.24 or 11.25 i remember the run before that i left at 4800 and almost looped it that run i remember clearly.

chevnut55
09-30-2010, 06:30 AM
dont want to loop! i was thinking set the suspension hard front and rear. front tire 35 lbs and rear 25lbs.
i was also thinking of reversing the sift linkage, and leaving in 2nd gear. i did it in my 67 cobra to stop wheel spin and skip a shift and it worked.
when you shift, did you use the clutch?

anrkizm95
09-30-2010, 08:46 AM
Yes I used the clutch.it will take 6-7 runs to get your best down unless you hit it on the few but you wont know it until you compare all of them.I have an app for my phone that gives 1/4 mile times and 60 ft and top speed so when I went I only had to deal with track conditions not bike set up so much

it was good fun,my brother broke into the 10s with his ninja zx10...id like compete somehow with my bike only if he would do a track day.. i last raced my ninja it was completlet different,on the ninja it was fast and easy very predictable,on the buell it was more fun because of the torq, it still felt like i was running 10s.
my advise if you have never raced do it,its the most fun you can have on your bike. just stay in the car tire marks and pin it.http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/5378_20101004112313_L.jpghttp://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/5378_20101004112513_L.jpghttp://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/5378_20101004113140_L.jpg

I've only race my super tt one time against a 2008 Night Rod Special who runs mid to hig 11's. I smoked him. My bike is 102 HP at the rear wheel. We shut down at about 120 and I had him by a full 80 feet.

Not scientific but good enough for a dirt bike, if I had to guess I'd say 11.25.

Just got back from Tri-State Raceway in Earlville, Iowa. I ran my 2008 Buell XB9SX that has a magnaflow exhaust built by me and a K&N air filter. Here's my times:

R/T .001
60' 1.930
330 5.189
1/8 7.879
MPH 90.84
1000 10.250
1/4 12.293
MPH 109.71

Not sure how I pulled off the .001 light but it sure feels good to see that on my slip.

My best time is on a 1/8 mile track.. no 1/4 mile tracks around.. the bike is a 07 xb12s, mods are 595 cams, race map, open air box, custom exhaust, hot plugs.. This is my best as of now...

r/t .002
60" 1.871
330 4.967
1/8 7.551
mph 96.99...

I did this pass side by side with redwhiteandbuell this summer.. I also did another 7.55 pass but all the other times were different.. little slower on the launch and top speed... ever since it has been about impossible to come close to that.. I believe my clutch is in dier need of replacement.. closest i have got since then is a 7.72 if i can find the slip i will post a pic..

Time to dig up an old thread for the new drag racing season!

Guess I have to see the rules on safety leathers at thunder valley I'd like to see what my 02 s3 will do !

murd leathers needed to run 1/4 (seem to let chaps pass if you have those) you need at least helmet gloves jacket and closed toe shoes to run 1/8th.

Thunder valley said , long pants , gloves , boots that go above the ankle ( work boots are acceptable ) and a leather or Kevlar riding coat/jacket .seems all I need to do is get a jacket ( the helmet part is a no brainier )

This is an old thread but reading this is pretty much all I knew about drag racing before I went tonight. I also didn't understand a damn thing about it but two really nice Buell guys showed me the ropes and were very nice. First run I took it cautious. Second run I got greedy and popped a wheelie, unexpectedly and accidentally popped it into neutral. Third run my head started to understand some things. For $22 that was so much fun! '04 Firebolt XB12R.
R/T: .455
60': 2.093
330: 5.595
1/8: 8.520
MPH: 84.31
1000: 11.145
1/4: 13.424
MPH: 95.39

All in all I had fun. I could have pushed it harder but was taking it easy and not there to impress anyone. One of the Buell guys had an extended swing arm and it was incredibly fast. He said I beat him once because he "red lighted." I don't know what that means but it was nice of him to say. That was on my worst run, with the wheelie and neutral flop.

WillRotten, nice job. Totally respect the honesty and the admittance to mistakes. Sounds like you had a blast. The other guy that "red lighted" jumped the beams, he left to early before the he was supposed to.

Okay, that's what I was guessing but didn't know for sure. I was such a newbie. Went knowing that but I like doing new things and things that scare me. This was both. I want to go back tonight but can't. I'm hooked. The track is going to let me do my stunt there next Sunday. I'll be the first person in the world to swallow a sword while riding a motorcycle

It's a lot of fun. Cheap date night with my bike. I wanted to go to the 1/8 mile track but the V twin guys convinced me that the 1/4 is a little safer with a nice long finish. The best advice I was given was "Take off like your at a stop light and then get on it. Matching clutch release with throttle twist." That's when I improved. Avoid flipping it cause man does mine like to pull up.

Well it's not 1/4 mile times but I to my old as to the local 1/8 mile. She ran 8.2 sec at 91mph if I could have figured out how to get off the line my ETA's were in the mid 7's

Sacramento CA has a open to the public on Wednesday nights. My buddy says he doesn't like going because of all the high schoolers in the import tuners. I still want to go.
