I've just developed this problem but it started raining as I was checking it out so thought I'd try the forums to save myself some time if its a known problem. Obviously the issue's due to stretch on the wiring harness. At full lock to the right the electrics die just as if you'd turned off the ignition. First time this happened I hit the front brakes, slid forward and wacked my goolies on the airbox cover. Not pleasant. All the connectors seem tight. The problem can be reproduced by pulling downwards OR UPWARDS on the harness inside the front cover. It doesn't happen when pulling on the harness as it passes around the steering head. So I think the problem's inside the front cover somewhere. Wires and connector to the ignition barrel seem good. BTW is a 2003 XB9S.

check near the steering head, where the wires cross the frame.

Had the same problem. Some where your wires are to tight and the prussire may not disconnect them but impedes the wire connection.

PROBLEM SOLVED!

thanks for your input, LeFox and xtremelow.

the problem turned out to be a failing solder joint where 1 wire splits into 2 leading to the ignition barrel. it was located where the harness goes around the steering head. from repeated stretching with turning the handlebars the threads of one wire were breaking one by one. it was hanging on by about 3 threads.

i took some pics but i couldn't figure out how to upload them.

Look next to the Search button near the top of the page, just under the BuellXB.com banner. There is a button that says "Your Photos" click that and it's pretty easy to do from there, just hit the browse button and find your pics. To add them to a post just do this.

This is with the front cover and headlights removed. The wires in question are in the lower part of the pic.

A close up of the ignition wires where 1 goes to 2.

After I've pared back the insulation (carefully). Only a few threads hanging on.

Actually dave, that is a really old picture and I did discover the Print Screen button and Clipboard since then. Check out the massive post I just made about Uploading Pics, hope it gets stickied. Thank you very much though.

Wow, at least you figured it out though, so are you going to repair it, replace the wiring harness, or have you devised a work around?

PS - Sorry for hijacking your thread with Dave.
