I have a red xb12r. I am thinking of painting the plastics black or even matte black. Has anyone done this??? If so, how does it look...have any pics? Thanks guys! Buell-on!!!

I used Hotrodz Flatz Burnt Orange and Flat Black Metallic.
It was my first paint job with automotive paint, turned out it was very easy to do and turned out pretty good. I use Krylon fusion plastic primer and let that cure for a week then sanded that with 400grit then paint. Its hard to see the color because the camera I used sucks. I need to get some new ones with my new camera.

You can see the black the best in this pic.

Bad A$$ paint. Especially for a first timer. Ive been painting cars for 15yrs and plan on doing my bike this winter. Havent come up with a color scheme yet though. Anyways nice bike. Enjoy it and keep the orange side up.:D

Painted mine, it is all about the prep like in any paint.

They have plastic preps so your bike will turn out perfect. I Did mine myself and been looking good for 2 years, but I would recommend getting a rivet eliminator kit so you can paint along and inside the edges of the chin fairing as it can be completely taken apart, for the tank cover cut out the plastic rivets holding the black priece for the filler neck. The only pbonlem I had was masking off around those areas since I didn't have a rivet kit and didn't want to drill out new holes around the filler hole to remount that to the airbox cover.

I painted mine with GM Black Metallic from a spray can I bought from Autozone. It came out nice, until I cleared the pieces. It was thin in some places, and thick in others. I plan on re-doing it very soon with some kind of Orange Metallic since my exhaust is broken. BTW I ride a 2006 Buell Blast.

I used Rust-Oleuim Painters Touch Ultra Cover,it's ment for outdoor plastic patio furniture so it's got UV protection and flexabality.I used 600 grit wetsand paper to scuff up the plactic, primered, wetsanded with 1200,and sprayed the color, when using spray paint lay down 4 to 5 coats of paint and use very fine wetsand paper as the spray paint is alot thinner than auto paint and you will sand right through it,trust me[smirk]before in whitehttp://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/2009_20081122170519_L.jpgand after in orange/blackhttp://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/2009_20110401143057_L.jpghttp://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/2009_20110426031306_L.jpg

Here is the wifes bike that I painted. Her bike was the black plastic that I sanded down with 220 grit sandpaper then put a real good plastic adhesion promoter on(most important step). Then I put on primer and sanded that down. Then when I was ready to paint I sprayed sealer, silver base, light purple candy with rainbow flake, 3 coats of clear coat, then wet sanded and buffed. I used all PPG paint and have not had a problem at all with this, no sand scratches or nothing!

looks great! nicely done.

Here is my 3 step rattle can metallic grey job I did on a spare airbox the other day.

step 1: sand with 400 grit

step 2: spray with metallic gray

step 3: finish my beer and admire my work:
