BUELL MOTORCYCLE COMPANY ANNOUNCES INTENT TO ENTER NEW MOTORCYCLE MARKET SEGMENT

Buell to Build Off-Road Competition Motorcycles Within Two Years

EAST TROY, WI -- (Friday, March 09, 2007) Buell Motorcycle Company recently announced its intent to bring an off-road motorcycle to market, specifically designed for closed-course competition.

“We’ve told our dealers about our plans to bring an off-road, closed-course competition motorcycle to market within the next two years,” said Chairman and Chief Technical Officer Erik Buell. “This will allow Buell dealers the time needed to make plans to meet the needs of this new market and customer.”

“Harley-Davidson and Buell are highly committed to broadening the range of products we offer and reaching out to new groups of customers,” said Buell President and Chief Operating Officer Jon Flickinger. “We’re always looking at new market opportunities, but this one is particularly exciting.”

No details about the new Buell motorcycle have been released.

Has anyone heard any more than what's stated in the article? Are they talking about a new Ulysses or something? [confused]

Most I have seen was a artist rendering of what it MAY look like. Never really heard anything beyond that.

Did it look like a dirt bike, or was it more like a flat track type?

"specifically designed for closed-course competition"

Makes me think a true dirt bike is on the way.

Looked like a Husqvarna dirtbike to tell you the truth, with the graphics of the XBRR

Are these the ones that are supposed to have the Rotax plant in them?

Yes, but whats a supermoto bike. Just a dirtbike with wheels, tires, brakes, and maybe different suspension.

There is a quote in the new issue of Fuell magazine that comfirms it is a dirt bike.

Page 18

"What the release of the 1125R says - along with the announcement we made is January, that we'll be releasing a dirt bike within two years - is that Buell is a full-blown American sportbike company."

Buell Dirt Bike Program Shelved

By: Guido Ebert

Buell Motorcycle Company says it is shelving its off-road motorcycle development plans for the foreseeable future. Earlier this year, Buell announced plans to enter the closed-course, competition use off-road motorcycle market.

"Buell has made the business decision to focus resources on its street motorcycle business, including continued development of the XB line and the launch of the all new 1125R superbike platform," Buell president and COO Jon Flickinger says. "Buell customers and dealers have expressed incredible excitement for the new 1125R superbike and our entry into the mainstream sportbike market."

It was February when Buell announced its intent to bring an off-road motorcycle to market.

their sales are doing pretty good...i'm guessing they are pretty busy with the launch of the 1125r and keeping up with the demand.

The July 2008 issue of Motorcyclist has an interview with Jon Flickinger (Pres and COO of Buell). He pretty much said the dirtbike project was looked at and they decided not to go ahead with it. They want to concentrate on street. This issue also has an article with Erik Buell. It is basically a huge history lesson. Even more exciting Flickinger said the focus will be on streetfighters.

I was hoping on that becoming reality with a spin off of a Motard like the DRZ400SM. Then a hypermotard with the 1125R motor in it. :D
