I picked up a 09 xb12r that has had a rough life.
Rebuild will be pretty extensive so I decided to document it here for anyone that might do the same.
First picture is from when I picked it up.

First step was going through the bike and finding what's all wrong.
-Frame needs to be replaced.
-Primary starter gears stripped.
-Starter is probably bad and will be replaced.
-I found a crank in the bottom of the case below where the clutch would be. I think it's repairable but case will have to be split.
- oil pump housing needs to be replaced as one of the threads for the inlet line were stripped and damaged.
- new shifter.
SO the first step was to take it apart.

Things I am looking for if anyone has them.
-oil pump housing,
-oil line that is on the bottom that goes to the bottom left of the swing arm
-rear brake lever
-08-09 header
-chin fairing,
-muffler mount that bolts to the engine.

I had an oil cooler inlet line fitting break of in my oil pump housing and was able to find it at the local Williams oil filter store for $5. Tapped out the old threads. Used high temp thread lock. Snugged the fitting, making sure the angle was plum with the oil line. Used high temp thread lock on the other end of the fitting. Used a propane torch to cure the thread lock on both sides of the new fitting. About 2k miles later and no leaks on the new fitting. This may save you $150 instead of a new oil pump.

The previous owner already tried to "repair" it and its really too far gone. they did some horrible dermal work and tried to glue it all in. There are no threads left in the housing itself and i think its too big of a hole for even an thread insert.

Over all its in pretty good shape. However i did find a problem. There was a small crack in the bottom of the case on the primary side.
So the case is at the machine shop being repaired right now. It looks like the previous owner attempted to "fix" it.

Beson full race exhaust. I have one on my xb9r.....loud AF. If you don't like it and end up wanting to get rid of it lmk I will take it off your hands. Looks like the can outlet is pointed to the wrong side. Also, I see it has hairline crack repairs. How much did you fork out for that?6326

I always use Isky rev-lube for rotating parts and redline two-stroke oil for cylinders.
There was a bit of a snafu with the heads so i am waiting on some parts. Does anyone know what the spring washer for the clutch part number is?
its not listed on twin bikes. This is the one that goes in the center under the special nut that is not flat and says up on it.

Same as a Sportster part if you want to run to the dealer and grab one. Or I'm sure I have a few spares in my hardware buckets. What's the story on the heads? Those are Kibblewhite valves right? Is that some of Chad's handiwork?

Kole_DeWoody
02-07-2017, 04:33 PM
They are the valves from hammer performance. Just a miss communication with the local machine shop about what needed to be done with the intake valves so i had to order new seats. Not a big deal just have to wait on the mail.

Oh, so you bought valves separate? Why not have Hammer set them up for those valves? Are those 1.900" or 1.980" intake valves? Stock seats can support 1.900" but not 1.980", but intake and exhaust valve seats will both have to be sank a ton to run the 1.980"s. Without significant decking or similar work, the chamber volume will be huge.

Kole_DeWoody
02-10-2017, 09:15 PM
They are 1.98s and yes I am having the seats for them put in also. My close friend owns a performance engine machine shop so that's why I just got the valves. Yes they are sunk a little but that's why I got the full 12:1 pistons so the compression should be about right. I need to have the throttle body over bored probably. I have not decided what cams exactly yet as I am working with ebr on am ecurrently that has a tune thathe will be close as it's the set up they ran for a while with the exhaust I have. Hammer recommend the 585/591 redshift.

Slightly off topic, but looking at the motor, how hard would it be to paint or powdercoat the metal oil lines? Good idea? Bad?

34nineteen
02-24-2017, 10:44 PM
Lookin' good! My parts came back from powder as well.

I'm considering pulling the frame/tank and sending it and the swingarm to powdercoat as well. At that time, I was considering pulling the heads and at the very least just doing a top end inspection. I think my lifters are getting a bit noisy. Normally, I wouldnt notice, but my Sportster has so much less engine noise!

Anyhow, keep up the great work!!!

Kole_DeWoody

You could not powder coat it because of the rubber section. But no reason you can paint them. Just use good quality paint

I painted my lines, it turned out pretty sweet! I just used "automotive" quality spray paint form a parts store. just make sure you do a really nice job cleaning and prepping the metal.

Dude that's sick. I can't wait to start on mine. Just a heads up, the wiring harness is kind of a pain in the ass to mate up with the frame on. I figured that out when my bike was in the same state as yours. Next time I'll have everything connected to the engine and slip what needs to go to the back of the bike through the frame first and then bolt the frame up. Just keeps you from tugging on wires and scratching the frame

Kole_DeWoody
02-28-2017, 03:36 PM
Yeah I'm going to, the frame is just sitting on it. I had to clean the harness and get the clips yesterday. Hopefully it will be on its wheels by Friday.

Now you have to do engine rotation to attach exhaust headers.

No you don't. Just have to have the right sockets and extensions. It's easy when the fan is out.

I am waiting on some parts right now, and have been out of town for a week. Hopefully i will get the subframe and front engine frame back tomorrow.

Finished final instalation on a lot of stuff. I know it does not look much further along but everything on the main bike is torqued and locktighted. Most cables are adjusted and brakes are bled. Hopefully I will get the subframe and engine frame back tomorrow. After that the two major things are what to do about the fairings. I can either try to sand and Polish. Paint them or wait a little while and just get mostly all new ones. The last question after that is the exhaust. Right now it has an open bent stock header..... top choice is a Beson replica. Second choice would be a micron. In the mean time I may build a temp out of a 2.5in vibrant oval resonator and tig up and inlet.

Well went ahead and ordered the front fairing from new Castle since it was in the worst shape and new Castle said it was the last in Stock.

If anyone is looking for a front fairing in decent shape, let me know.
Also have spare 09 ECU and wiring harness i would sell, and a 09 speedo that works great but has a crack.

I had a couple little issues i could use some input on.
First when braking hard on the front brake it kinda feels like a warped rotor on a car. When braking softly it does not do it, i am not sure what is going on here.
Second, Pretty sure the tune is pretty off. Right now it has a stock xb9 muffler and stock header with K&N filter. It got pretty hot.
Third sometimes at idle the oil light will blink a little especially when it is hot, does anyone know what the pressure is that they come on at?

Did you dial in on those issues?

Yes getting better. Afv is a tad high.

Kole_DeWoody

Oil light was just a poor connection at the sensor.
The brake has seemed to mostly fix itself. Also part of it was I had forgotten. About the engine returning to idle shake. Tune is still being dialed it.
