View Full Version : Air horn, filling the void

I have always liked loud and deep horns, but up until now I couldn't fined a suitable location to mount one on the bike without compromising the looks of the bike. As some of you may know I recently cut out the letters (Buell) on my outer air box and this gives me a direct view of the air box when I ride. I noticed that the air filter is off center in the air box, so on the right side of the air box I have a good view of the air filter, but on the left side all I see is a giant void. So I thought a air horn would help even things out. I started with a compact air horn from Stebel, which produces 139db @ 300Hz. Installation was simple, just follow the instructions. I had to separate the air cylinder from the horn and reconnect them using a piece of tubing to get it to fit like I wanted, but that step is not necessary if your only objective is to make it fit.

Well, here are the pic's

It is LOUD :o and @ 300Hz it sounds like a Big rig horn.

Well that's it, just thought I would share.

I dont have much experience with it yet, but I can tell you that you would not want to lay on it for extended periods of time.

Your close midnight82, but that is not the one I bought.
I bought the (12V Stebel Nautilus Compact Truck Horn)Both will work, I just like the tone of the truck horn. At 300Hz my horn is the lowest and deepest horn stebel offers in a compact configuration.

This is the horn and who I got it from. He is a good guy and this is the second horn I have bought from him. You can negotiate with price a little to, what I usually do is offer to give him the "Buy it Now" price and he will include the wiring kit and fuse kit for free. He also has a link to his website so you can listen to sound clips of what the horn sounds like.

Video with audio?

On the site it is just audio, but I might make a video if requested. I just dont know if I have a camera with a mic good enough to do the horn justice.

I think the echo of the sound of the horn will head toward to your ears thru the holes of the airbox?
Am i wrong??

How is that any different than the stock setup behind the fly screen? I may have a front row seat, but the horn is loud enough to be clearly heard in all directions.

Have you noticed any type of electrical drain when you hit the horn? ie, dimming head-lights or dash lights? I had a buddy that had a train horn installed in his car which was good for a lot of laughs!

Slightly off-topic, but you don't happen to have build pics of the Buell cutouts on the airbox cover, do you?

If not, how about a shot of the underside of the airbox cover?

I have a first-year XB12S, and the tank logo looks, well, tacky. I've got a K&N on order, but if I cut my airbox lid, the only place to get air is from the original hole in the frame.

Oh, and are there any problems riding in the rain?

Threadjack over, sorry... :o

The horn location looks more deadly to the rider than to other people... Neat idea for sure, though...

I did start a tread about it, but the details were not that great. I cut the bulk of the material with a dremel and finished the rest with a file and a razor. Then I masked the top of the airbox and used a can of duplicolor truck bed liner to spray the inner wall's of the cutout from the inside of the airbox. Then I superglued the mesh to the inside of the airbox. That's about it, here is the link.

Also when you remove the decals they will leave a outline of residue that you use as a guide. Do not rush this or the dremel will bite you big time.

Gosh nitto, you should have not even slowed down, you had room between the gsxr and the car. That other bike passed you guys like you were standing still.

The group I was riding with is not fond of passing over the double yellow so that is why we did not pass. The guy on the R1 who passed us was in our group at the end of it so all that speed you see was gained from the from a very short distance. That thing rips in a strait line, but I can get him in the corners.

Hey Nitto. Great vid btw!

Question. How did you wire the horn to your horn button? Did you keep the stock horn as well?

You disconnected the stock horn and plug in the new one. With this setup there are four wires that have to be run. The first two connect to the stock wires and the other two connect to the positive and negative battery terminals. If you buy the same horn as me it will come with instructions.
