I got the idea from Pointdoc's mod, but this is what I did.

I bought a Nissin front radial master cylinder off of a 2005 Kawasaki ZX6R for $47 shipped from ebay.

The brake switch plug is compatible with the Buell so all that was needed was some extra slack from the wire.

I was also able to use the stock brake line and banjo bolt, but the stock line is a little short if you are running stock handlebars. I have some Crossroads on the way so that will solve the problem.

I also had to modify the mount for the fluid cup to make it work.

Well, here are the pic's

My immediate impression when I first rode the bike with this setup is wow. The brakes are very strong and the rear tire goes in the air at will. For around $50 this is a huge improvement in performance, and I recommend the mod for those who want more stopping power.

Did it come with the brake lever?
All the ones on ebay I saw were $75 on up - maybe too many people discovered your idea...

Yes the lever was included. Suzuki also runs the same Nissin MC on the (I thin 06-08)GSXR 600-750, so you can try searching that on ebay as well.

And what does this do over the stock setup?

And what does this do over the stock setup?

It works the front caliper to its potential. Basically it requires less lever pull to stop and you get better feedback/feel for what the front brake is doing.

nice mod, have been looking to change to radial myself. But do you have an idea how many mm this brak master cilinder is? And how far can you pull the lever, how much space is there between the lever and the handlebar when braking full?

Thx,

Tim

Tim, I dont know what it would be in MM but I would think it is > 19mm. With this setup less lever pull is required to stop because of the larger diameter piston displaces more fluid with a shorter stroke. I can almost pull the lever to the grip but I have ASV levers now so I have an almost infinite amount of adjustment.Where the lever stops is just a matter of personal preference.

Hope that helps

Has anyone done this mod on a firebolt? Any clearance issues with the fairing?

mcdonald1093,

This mod has been done on a Bolt and they did encounter clearance issues while turning the handlebars to full lock. Personally that would not be enough to stop me because the bars are never turned that far while riding, but it is up to you.

I like this idea, but thanks to your (most excellent) photos, I see that I'd have to go with bar-end mirrors. (Don't want to start that discussion, but suffice to say I need to use standard mount mirrors. So, I think I'll try to search and see if any of the "big nakeds" use a radial MC.

My front break works great! You can buy an 8 piston caliper instead of creating a whole new master cylinder for probley about the same cost. Or you might already have an 8 pisten. Just a suggestion.

The ZTL2 caliper requires a larger master cylinder to function properly and cost $380 for the conversion kit. This mod will cost about $50. Hmmm, I wonder what one he will chose?:D

Bumping a necro-thread, but just wanted to mention that I'm about to do this mod. I found an '09 ZX10R master on ebay for $50 (a veritable bargain). The lever is broken, but I'm ordering an ASV from Puzzled anyway, so that wasn't a consideration.

The radial master will provide much better feel (and probably outright power), and I can be rid of the "integrated reservoir" that I am not a hug fan of...

How do you know what can fit and cant fit. Also this means you would have to buy new levers if you want your aftermarket ones correct?

What can i use for my 1125?

Loki, I am going to have to buy another ASV lever (to match the clutch side), but I figured I could sell my current ASV lever/ZTL2 master and come pretty close.

Most later-years GSXR/ZX' use the same Nissin Radial master cylinder with a 19mm piston. Nitto has shown that this works, so I'd look for any ZX6/10R or GSXR60/750/1000 radial front master and go from there. And being as how your 1125R utilizes the same ZTL2 caliper/brake system, this would work wonderfully on yours (I believe Nitto used the exact same set up on his 1125R track bike).

I am not running a right hand mirror at the moment, so I won't miss the mirror mount for now. If I change my mind and add the right hand Rizoma, I can order this for $10:

did it on my Firebolt......I would be careful, if the clearance between the master cylinder and speedo housing is not addressed the brake will lock up on sharp turns (even at 2 mph it will dump you...)

i just recently bought the master, brake lines, and dual front calipers for $80 on ebay... turned around and sold the dual calipers and lines for $80 the next day.... so... master was free :)

Also lucked out and bought a ZTL2 on ebay for $99 shipped!! This also came with the buell master and brake line. I was going to sell the master to bring my total investment down, but it has a little road rash.

so 19mm radial master and ZTL2 for a grand total of $99.00. Just need to find some time to install it.
