View Full Version : So what's the story on the race kit?

Gunfreak

In spite of the strong language in the owner's manual telling me not to buy this for street use, I'm going to do it because I'm a big boy and I do pretty much whatever the hell I want!! So how much difference does this make? We're talking about the kit that changes out the chip, muffler and air filter, right? Is it a serious difference, or is it not worth the money? Does anyone know the difference in HP and torque?

Thanks

The gains you see can range from 7-10% at the rear tire on 9's or 12's. As far as putting one on, they are still very street-able and actually makes them more fun. I drive my XB9R to work every day and I have had a race kit on it since the second day I owned it. I love it. The thing is now though, you can't really find them anymore. I have to hunt all over the U.S. to find them at another dealer so I can sell them over the counter. I know some aftermarket sites have the set ups too, so I would try there also. Let me know if you want me to find you one.... :D lol

Well, a call to the local Harley/Buell dealer confirms that the kits are hard to find! Luckily, they've got a muffler, a nearby dealer has a chip, and apparently the air filter can still be ordered from Buell. Funny, the chip is still advertised on their web site but you supposedly can't get it. So anyway, my bike's going in Wednesday to get the kit. This bike, stock as it is, has enough power that when I accelerate full-throttle the front end comes off the ground when I hit about 4,000 rpm. If it's a bit cold out, it comes off the ground high enough that I'm sure it'll flip over backward if I don't let off the throttle. And yet I need more power. Is this a great country, or what? :D

Gunfreak when you piece them together I think it is a little more expensive, but its gettin to the point where thats what has to be done to get them anymore. The only things they still offer as normal is the ECM and the air filter. They do not sell them as kits anymore. The K&N filter is actually a few bucks cheaper than the Buell unit.

Thanks buellxb, for the info on the site. I will be able to refer them to that site now also because I was only able to find one other site that had them readily in stock. Thats one thing that sucks as a dealer is I can't buy from aftermarket places like that and still have it practical. If I did end up having to get one from them I would have to buy it at their retail and then sell it for more so our company can make some money also. I don't like to sell people marked up ****, so I just refer them to places like that and then still offer to install them as if they had bought it here. I think Buell guys get a hard enough time finding people with parts and to get them to work on them, I try to give them a break as often as I can....

can you remap the stock box on buells I know the big v twins are allowing you to do that without having to buy a power commander or dfo ect ect

I am not sure, but I will find out..... [smirk]

As of yet there is no way to remap the stock ignition box. I don't know what is taking them so long to come up with a set up like the big twins have. I don't think there was as great of a demand as with the big twins, hence the reason we have so many problems finding parts for our Buells. With the introduction of FI on the Sportster line, I hope this will change it a bit!

Yeah considering they are putting almost an identical fuel injection on the XR1200. It has the air box cover like a Buell mimicing the fuel tank. Still pretty sweet though.

from what i see with my buddys who ride jap ..there downloading other maps off the net and down loading into there power commander..but dont get nearly the same bang as getting a custom map with a dyno tune ..seen a few dyno tune runs on the net with buells gaining 15 t0 20 lbs of torque between 3000 to 4500 rpm..now thats big....hp improve a little but the largest gain was in the torque numbers...brought there torque in the high 70s close to 78

For anyone that has modified their XB with the official race kit or an aftermarket one, what is the noise like? I'm considering this modification, but I don't want the pipes to be too loud. A certain degree of decibel increase is fine, but there’s a point where it can become too loud for me. What are your opinions?

BuellPartsGuy

gunfreak do you have the race kit installed..and if so does it feel much better then stock form

BuellPartsGuy

It is a huge improvement over the stock form. I would never own another Buell without one...

I don't know about everyone else, but my Buell XB12Scg seems like enough to kill me with a flick of the wrist. I would love my pipes to be louder, but more power almost seems like overkill. Maybe I'm just a big Sally Puss. :D

buellxb thats what i want to here..my next bike i want to keep stock tired of being the quickest or fastest...it cost money ;)..spent enough on upgrades over the years...just want to push the button and ride without always looking for more power..enjoy the bike for what is is

I hear that from all the big Harley guys that come in claiming to have a built engine. I just smile as I lift the front tire right past them.

Hi,

anyone owning a a Buell XB 12s (mine is sep 03), using the original race kit, having installed either a power commander or this piece.

If yes, what do differ them apart, what is the gain?

As far as the injection system on the Sportster using a false tank like the Buell as an airbox, this is wrong. The injection system is identical to the one used on all current Big Twin bikes. Not the same parts, but the same set up. (TB attached to a manifold, and using an actual fuel tank) Hey BuellPartsGuy you work at a stealer, get out from behind the counter and take a look.

BuellPartsGuy
01-05-2007, 04:22 PM
Well guy, if you read what I was posting about, I was talking about the XR1200 that was released in Europe, not US production Sportys. And yes I know they use the same style injection set up as the Big twins, sharing things like injectors. So try again dude, maybe they'll have some answers on eBay... :p

lol jk

Are you going to that Techfactory up there on Deer Valley, or do you just buy every motorcycle magazine you can? Do some research, and you will see that it is an actual fuel tank, and the intake system is below it! Don't just look at the pictures, read the articles! Nothing worse than a kid with an issue of Backstreet chopper in his hands! And stop watching American Chopper they are hacks!

Coming from the guy that does all this backwoods tech **** to his Buell, wow. [smirk] That was just the wording on HDnet.com website, the dealer website, way before it was in any magazine. Thats all they had listed on it and didnt even have a picture at the time. Just a short article about it. I've never seen an artcle in a magazine about it yet. Probably because I dont read em. Don't be jealous dude just because I work at a dealer and you applied and never got a call back. lol. And quit trying to talk **** on here man. Arguing on the internet is like running in the special olympics, even if you win, You're still retarded. Grow up man, youre the one acting like a kid when youre calling me one. You sit there and make fun of the dealers, but yet thats where you have to go get them serviced.

For your information, I worked at Hacienda while I was wasting my time at MMI, and then after I graduated. I don't take my bike there, and I do my own work. What have you done? Drilled some holes in your cover and called it an update? Maybe I will come and let you change my oil so that you can afford to take your girl to McDonalds!

from what drummer told use if im not mistaken with his muffler aftre a few days of riding in the 3 to 4000 rpm range the stock efi system adjusts to the pipe his dyno chart shows a gain of 10 pounds of torque..if thats all true it must adjust somewhat...if true the pipe would save a lot of money...its the touque i would want in the street....[up][down]

BuellPartsGuy

Actually, I didn't drill holes. I spent real money and bought on 06 XB airbox top. I do **** right, not off eBay. Now I see why you have the attitude of know it all, you went to MMI. I put up with you jokers all day long. I get a laugh every time one of you guys come in. I do all my own work and do it right with factory parts, and I didn't need MMI to tell me how to do it.

Chill out bro's. Although I love the conflict because it generates lots of content and discussion I wish we could all get along. I'm too much of a newbie to tell who's wrong or right, but I'm guessing that both of you are right to some degree. I seem to learn a lot when I get into cat fights on forums. I try to act tough at first, then I go back and check my facts and I always end up learning more than I did before the bitch fest. There's only one way to settle this... You both must go to my arcade site and play 'Spank the Monkey' Flash Arcade Games (http://www.goarcade.us)
The member with the highest score has to email me a screen shot by this Friday. I will post the winner on the forum. Good luck ladies! :D

No, I deal with these guys from MMI that come in all day long thinking they've done, seen and worked on everything. They always try to do $1000 worth of work for $25, and they come in and waste my time with a whole bunch of their wet dreams of what they want to do to their bike. Sick of being bad mouthed by these fools. Just because they can't afford to maintain their bike properly, I'm the asshole. I don't put up with that anymore. I know I don't know it all, and I probably never will, but I will do my best to learn the most I can, help teach other what I learn, and not get an arrogant attitude like I am better than the next man.

I have been wrenching most of my life, and didn't need MMI to tell me anything. But it is needed to be a Tech at a dealership. This is why you are just a parts guy and thats it. Just because you buy a factory part rather than modify your own, what makes you think this works better? If the factory stuff was so good, there would be no need for an aftermarket. Why don't you go in the back and tell your Techs what jokers they are for going to MMI, and how you know it all because you work at the parts counter. I do buy stuff off of Ebay, becasuse I can't justify spending hundreds of dollars at the dealership when I can get them for a fraction of the price online. And BTW, if you buy an airbox cover off of Ebay, that was on a Buell at some point, its still a factory part.

BuellPartsGuy

I do tell the techs they were jokers for going to MMI, but they are past the stage of thinking they know it all. They actually have experience now, and I respecet every single one of them. I am just hating on MMI because of all the newbies I deal with coming out of there. And if you actually read my posts, I stated I dont know it all, but I am respected in that dealership for my knowledge. And I have wrenched before, I did it for a couple years, but i got sick of buying tools and busting up my knuckles on other peoples bikes when I can make the same money if not more slinging parts for them, and I can keep all my good tools at home to work on my own stuff. Lastly, I never said anything bad about the aftermarket industry. I have aftermarket stuff on my bike. I was just stating I used factory parts and did it right with my airbox cover. And I see buellxb had to edit your post because you were getting nasty. Dont take it so personal man, we're just debating and having a good two sided convo. Ease up man, its just the internet....

I understand what you are saying about the kids comming out of there thinking they know everything. I was stuck with them for a year and a half. I did wrench at hacienda, and when the third day in a row came and went, and I only logged .74 hours, it was time to change careers. You talk alot of smack about mods done with non HD parts, or Ebay parts. I dont jimmyrig my stuff, never have, never will. My stuff looks and performes better than factory, or it doesn't stay on the bike. I know I don't know everything, and have been corrected on at least one on this site. (Headlight highbeams) All that was said that was edited was that I would be seeing you soon, and I will stop in to meet you and see if you are better than the past parts guys I have delt with over there. Only time will tell.

best price/performance: (slip on)
jardine - race ecm - k&n open filter

best performance slip on:
drummer - remap - k&n open filter

then you have all the full systems which are expensive and from which i haven't seen all dynoruns yet...so i can't advise you there.

I have a question? If I were to find a race kit, could I do it my self in the garage, or is it something the dealer has to install? I have read that it's plug and play! but is there any calibrations needed? That is if there is a kit somewhere out there to be found! :(

LeFox

install can be done by yourself...

tps reset also, if you have the software
if direct-linked, this needs to be done by a specialist with dyno

;)
