Well the mod is pretty straight forward. I added holes to allow more air to the filter.

I already have the Buell air box delete done. Then I pretty much shape the holes as I wanted to in the cover and cut them out with a dremel tool. I then added two layers of mesh in the inside held by a hot glue gun. And I trimmed the holes with edge molding for a car door.

Nice do-it-yourself mod! It looks clean. I would love to see a dyno or at least hear some feedback on power if you can tell the difference. Did you install the race kit? Air filter?

yea...some feedback on results and setup would be great!

It has the race kit.

And as far as a power improvment the reason I did it was because at the drag strip I took the top off for a couple runs and I instantly noticed a 3mph gain on the top end and a 2 tenths drop in time and that was averaged with 8 runs with the cover on and 10 with it off. So it is pretty acurrate not just one or two runs.

Those times were run with both the top fairing and filter cover on, and the faster were run with no restictions. I plan to go to the stip this Fri, but I might bring my truck instead if I run it as is I will post the improvment over last weeks runs.

So far the only difference I have noticed is sound it is a bit louder with the opening and nothing covering the filter, but all in all it is would only be seat of the pants difference felt until I can prove it at the track.

you run with an open airbox or a k&n cone?

I have the k&n race filter that is shaped like the stock one but I cut out a piece of hard plastic I had and just screwed it to the top of the filter I will post pics when I get home tonight.

Filter Picture. Just some plastic with a small foam gasket to make sure of the top seal and 4 screws to hold it to the filter. And there is no need to have a threaded rod to hold the filter on becasue it cant come off when the filter top fairing cover is on because it is so close.

Oh, I forgot to ask. With nothing "anchoring" the filter, its just pressure from the top air box that holds the filter on then? No vibration noise from the plastic hitting the filter?

No vibration noise what so ever.

couple of thoughts...

if you have nothing but the outer airbox cover over that filter setup, you have nothing holding it in place. i'd fix that before you suck in too much debris. even with my '07 inner cover in place i still have filter movement, not good. i now run a UNI foam filter w/cage.

regarding the top portion you fabbed for the filter, you definitely want the nipple in place you see on the stock units. the older 9s didnt use this but Buellers started adding a 12 inner lid with the nipple and felt improvement. Buell eventually started using the nipple version on all 9s as well. going with just a flat top is know to reduce power.

couple a coins... inlets look sweet though!

I am going to see how it runs at the track to see what gains if any I got and then adjust from there. I can understand the flat top reducin power vs the dome since it wont allow air to flow the same but I am going to see what the times at the track show as far as the top end results.

Also I did add 2 sided tape to the bottom of the filter so it cant move around. But even before the amount the engine was pulling air in damn near sucked the filter down all the time to begin with.

I have still been wondering about this damn knocking noise I have had for the past month. I thought maybe spark knock but that isnt it. It only knocks around 3000 rpm and that is it. I havent lost any power but I can definitly hear it.

Could we see all the pics for this again?
