broken primary cover

Hi, i'm new(registered)to this forum and the proud owner a XB12s 2004 witch i love.
Hope to find some answers for what as happened :)
Recently the lip that is taking the load of "unloading the clutch pack", inside the cover broke off, but i will try to fix it and keep it as spare(already order a new one).As anyone know why it has broken?
After pulling the cover i saw that the clutch adjusting screw as a bit of slack and wonder if it was the cause for the broken lip cause i'm afraid to damage the new cover(it will cost me 412€)

Hey lleubbx I defiantly don't think the bike was dropped. I have a 2004 xb12s and my bike has never gone down and I had the same thing happen to me not even two weeks ago.I been trying to figure out what may have caused it but cant come up with anything. All parts ordered lets just hope it doesn't happen. that cover was $ lots of it. well good luck with it

Lightning, if you'r going to open the primary, can you check if the clutch ajusting screw and shifter shaft are a bit loose cause mine are and i´m noob in this area.[confused]

OK well my bike is apart right now its been that way I'm waiting on parts. they are a bit loose too. but from what I know they should have some play in them. my bike has 14k on it.how many miles you got on yours? I honestly think that the clutch was adjusted a bit to tight on mine that's what caused it to break the tab off the primary cover. There are two tabs behind the clutch adjuster and being too tight just put pressure on those tabs causing one to break off and not allow my clutch to disengage.

Lightening, I was relieved by your confirmation of which it is a normal play.
My bike has around 7k miles, but the ancient owner had already fractured the lip of the cover that now broke once and for all after i adjusted the clutch.

hey yeah I solved the issue that I was having. The new cover I got had to be grind down a bit were the shifter arm comes through the cover it was sticking and would not shift. its a common issue.


faulty manufacturing. it wasnt anything you or the previous owner did.

that would be a tricky piece to weld. did you do that? ive had good and bad luck with aluminum.

i didnt don that particular one. my beads look a lil nicer. hehe.


better on a foot operated TIG imo. shouldnt be a difficult fix though. keep the tungsten real clean and clean off any coating 110% before welding. aluminum is highly prone to contamination if the proper precautions arent taken.
