View Full Version : Exhaust design flaw?

Has anyone noticed that the OEM exhaust "cooks" the rear rotor? Mine got so hot, it "rainbowed" the metal. I put on a Jardine RT-5. and now the swingarm has been toasted and it's "rainbowed". The Delrin spool is now a charcoal brickette. I don't get it. It's really a design flaw. Any comments on this issue??

It sounds like you're running really lean or something. Definitely not normal

I'm guessing you have a 1125??
Cause yeah the way those things are angled I can see it very possible, especially since Jardin is known for their "straight through" design

I don't think it's a lean vs rich situation. Yep, I have an '09 1125R. All my riding buds have noticed the issue. With the OEM muffler, you could fry an egg on the rear rotor after simply warming up the bike. Never seen a bike where the exhaust exits on to the swingarm or any part of the bike. Just check out an 1125R and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Lean or rich, exhaust gasses are HOT and shouldn't hit any part of the bike!

Seems odd; discs operate around 6-800F and exhaust is usually ~300F.

Despite that, don't you think that the exhaust should not hit any part of the bike? I can't think of any other bike, car, 4 wheeler, lawn mower, chain saw or any other motorized device that doesn't have the exhaust directed away from the rest of the parts. It would have taken simply exhaust tips that "turned out" away from the rear components of the bike.

ZX,
Had concerns about exhaust, too. Check out what I did with my factory can in this pic...cut off anemic twins and fabbed a single, side discharge outlet (about 2 1/4" ) Also the Torquehammer exhaust and the Drummer are side discharge exhaust...although a grand each I am trying to justify the cost, Or you could send me your can and I could mod it like I did mine. minimal cost...just a suggestion. Let me know if you are interested Tankthecarman@comcast.net

You know I am still willing to mod mufflers, but after thinking about your excessive heat issue, I think Davexb is right... have you chopped the airbox or tweeked the ecm? you sound dangerously lean...a quick trip to HD-Buell may be a necessity ASAP...

Nope, no mods like that. Just a K&N filter and slip-on pipe.

Did you ever get to the bottom of your crazy hot exhaust?

filter and pipe will make it run lean.

Well, I bought a galvanized 1 3/8" exhaust tip from Auto Zone, shortened it, painted it black and bolted it to the end-cap of the can....problem solved. Directs the exhaust out to the side and sounds MUCH better.

Do you have any pics? I bought two exhaust tips from auto zone a week ago, I just havent gotten around to doing it yet. I am very curious to see what yours looks like.
