so i got really tired of being annoyed of the silver on my frame, so i decided that i am going to get it all powdercoated to either black or yellow. so after about 8 hours of disassembly, i got it ready to take to the powdercoaters. i just dont know which color. i wish i had photoshop about now.. but here is the fun i had..http://www.buellxb.com/buell_images/4193_20091005160215_L.jpg

I like your makeshift bike stand there. I just might have to build one of those. Very cool tearing the bike down in just 8 hrs!

Good job! The name plate is just stuck on with an adhesive. I'd imagine taking it off would bend it and ruin it. You can however get any one you want to replace it. Even the 25th anniversary "signed" plate

You should go all out and do the fork tubes, muffler and magnesium fairing mount while you're at it. I've always been a big fan of blue and yellow, but black would look great too. Thats a tough one.

see the problem with the yellow and blue theme would be, i already have a black and yellow honda.. i guess i have to sell it. lol

i already pulled off the fairing mount... but you did just remind me to grab the front engine mount. as far as the muffler, i'm gonna do it after i gut it. i'm going to leave the forks the way they are.

Some high quality chrome powder coat would set it off nice

bttrfngrz
10-06-2009, 02:09 AM

bttrfngrz
10-06-2009, 02:10 AM

Yellow, maybe metallic to give it that anodized look??

10-06-2009, 03:36 AM
YELLOW yuck, I would go with black, yellow tends to be a fade color.

I would go black. I wouldnt be able to stand the yellow for long. BTW...what is it costing to have all that powder coated?

10-06-2009, 02:38 PM
i would go with yellow for everything but your frame, would take alot of cleaning to keep a yellow frame looking good. But no where near as much for a black frame.

bttrfngrz
10-06-2009, 10:12 PM
it's gonna cost me a little less than 200.. my friend does powdercoating. motorcycles need alot of cleaning in general. show me a bike that doesn't need cleaning much, i'll show you whats happening around the case.

Brake calipers? Heal gaurds? Primary cover? Cam cover?

bttrfngrz
10-07-2009, 05:33 AM
i'm painting the calipers red, the heel gaurds are gonna be aftermarket. i like the cam cover the way it is. the primary cover is gonna be powdercoated black. but with a smooth finish the stock harley finish sucks.

I have allways stuck to 1 rule with bikes/ and or cars ''you cant go wrong with black'' Anyways can magnesium be powder coated? I wanted to do my rims and someone told me it wouldnt stick.

bttrfngrz
10-10-2009, 06:22 AM
magesium can be powder coated fairly easy and it's actually preferable that you powdercoat rims. dot three fluid doesn't ruin powder coating like it ruins paint.

alright so still waiting on parts and i decided to make a bearing run, and got them all except the lower tree bearing, which has a raised inner race. doesn't really make sense i think maybe it was a duct tape fix from a previous owner because the part number in the parts book is the same as the upper tree bearing. they're completely different.

so my upgrades during this debacle were; black levers. everything powdercoated, bearings mirror block offs. and soon xtreme's headers. on my list of to do's are ecm spy, the headers, gut my exhaust, paint my calipers, flush mount turn signals or block offs. rebuild engine. but thats gonna be next month.

xtremelow
10-25-2009, 10:38 PM
Soon on the header? It is still sitting in my garage.

But here is a tease.

hey bttrfngrz,

what prep work did you have to do? Did you sand off or strip the old finish? also, what'd you do about fuel in the frame to make it safe to bake the powdercoat? you just drain it as dry as possible and use an air compressor to evacuate the vapors?

bttrfngrz
10-29-2009, 02:03 AM
well i sand blasted it(made sure the dirt didn't get into the tank.) i had the bike completely topped off before i drained it(less active vapor). then i let it sit fully open a couple nights in my garage.
