I just got off the phone with Woody's Wheel Works. I am going to drop my Uly off there in June and two monthes later pick it up with wire wheels. Unless ofcourse somebody here beats me to it. Either way we get wheels that will mount dualsport rubber. He said about 2g's for the whole thing. Woody's is in Denver, CO

Wow! 2 g's.[sad]

Will you be sacrificing strength in the wheels? Dont the Uly's have stronger wheels than the other XB's?

laced wheels are pretty strong. i wouldnt be surprised if they are stronger than factory

Laced wheels are much stronger than the factory cast wheels. If you notice the BMW GSA has laced wheels while the regular gs does not. There is a reason for that.

How are you going to manage the mounting the brake disc?

He says he can do it, but wondering if 2 grand is better spent on a KLR650 in addition to the Uly.

Why 19 for the front? Isn't that a cruiser setup?

Fun with photoshop. Not sure what to do with the front brake rotor so I left it out.

There is a site that makes the laced wheels and even a laced rear belt pulley. I'll try to find the site

Custom Laced Wheels (http://www.hdwheels.com/Pulley_and_Rotor.htm)

I don't need two bikes to maintain or insure, I just need better tire options for the great bike I already have. I think $2000 for custom built wheels isn't that bad. Excel's are what...$1200? I love this bike and will make that investment. Just need some more info.[up]

The 19" wheel on the front allows for better off-roading. It lightens up the front end allowing it to roll over obstacles much better!

Considering he will be coming up with custom machined hubs, $2k is a great deal - he must be giving you the developement deal, knowing there will be more folks wanting them.
Like me.
I can hardly wait to see how he handles the perimeter disk: I saw woody's websight a while back and thought about asking him about such a project and I imagined a very large hub with small spokes on a 3"x19" Sun rim on the front(looking something like a '60s GP bike with a huge fontana drum brake, or like Roger Goldammer Notorious custom bike - http://thekneeslider.com/archives/2007/08/08/notorious-by-roger-goldammer/)

I also figured you would need the '08 or later Uly front forks with the offset, and then flip them so the offset is foward, for wheel clearence and to bringing your trail back down(though that might bring it down to far)

I can hardly wait to see how it all comes out - and thanks for being the one to take the plunge!

Well I may have solved the front rotor mounting issue. Buchanan builds their Sun rims inhouse, so I figure for a few extra dollars and supplied a rotor they can weld the tabs on the rim to mount the rotor. Then the only challenge is the hubs which Woody can do up. The rear wheel is pretty conventional so that won't be so much of a challenge. Worst case scenerio I just have a rear wheel made and go with Avon Distanzias. They have a tire to mount on the front.

In the april issue of iron works mag Kossman changed XB rims from mag to spokes. He machined the wheel keeping the center hub and rim then driled them for spokes to retain the rim mounted brake. I know your doing this to change to a different size rim but its a option for someone who just wants to have a laced wheel.

each to thier own , kind of unique but, it looks somewhat weird or and not quite right, kinda strange, but your bike..
for 2 grand wow you could get a forged rim custom and alot stronger and easier to maintain in the future with spokes you run the chance of them breaking or bending and thats when you loose strengh and more and have to have someone replace them .
welds can break in high repeated shock. i would have the brake rotor bolt mount machined out when he machines your rim and make them very extra beef for added strengh.or do like twobuells post says , which is what the pic above from afinley, looks it has been done. just my opinion. show some pics when you get it finished.

Up front, what about fitting front fender/fork/brake/wheel from a big dirt bike?
Sticky tires desire more suspension travel :)

For serious of road riding, spokes still rule. 2K for custom wheels is more than reasonable.

For now going to give the new Scorpion Trails a try and see how they work. Doing a two day dirt ride the first weekend in May. Should give me a good idea if I can stick with those or need to do the wheels to fit TKC 80s.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yT4wErLm1GQ This link shows what can be done on the stock tires. Half the bikes had the Dunlops and the other half had the Pirellis. All the bikes were 09s.

Well I ended up spending 2200 on an 01 XR650L instead of the wheels. The pic of the Uly above still appears to have the same size tires, just wire wheels. I looks great, but the only reason I was considering was to make mounting TKC's easier.

I'm not a fan of how the stock wheels look, but I'm not sure spokes are right either. Definitely different though. For offroad riding I would definitely want a steel wheel, they bend but you can bend them back. Cast will just brake and then you are boned.

NOOOO!!! Not the spokes!jkjk The amber wheels are about 25% the reason y I bought the bike. But hey, its yours, u do what u love, (I wont knock)

glad you came to your senses.. the rear would have been easy but the front you would of had to go with a completely different front end. the rotor set up just wouldn't work or you would of had to get a custom size rotor and relocate your caliper. besides a uly is more of a gravel road bike you'll end up putting a hole in the muffler if you really trail it over any rocks.

I would rather have the stock wheels..Because they are strong enough for riding off road and they are tubeless..You can repair a tubeless tire easy.
