View Full Version : Black Frame for an XB9?

I have a new XB9, but I like the black frame of the 12. How difficult/pricey would it be to powder coat or ceramic coat the frame and swingarm to satin black? Is this major surgery?

You basically have to strip the frame bare, so I guess you could call that major surgery. Remember the frame is the gas tank so painting may be the only option, but I'm not positive about that.

You can not powder coat a Buell XB frame. The heat could alter the structural rigidity of the frame and make it unsafe to ride. Paint or a XB12 frame are your options.

That's what I was thinking, just wasn't positive. Thanks BPG

I believe that you CAN powder coat the frame of the bike, the temperature is not hot enough to cause any structural damage to the metal or ignite any un burnt gas. I think the temp used is around 160-180F, but unsure. A customer of mine has a powder coat shop and has done gas tanks on bikes and cars before, he said no problems [up]

Yeah but gas tanks on other bikes are not the main structural part of the frame.

180 degrees will not weaken the metal....if so we're all screwed.....our motors get very hot. feel the inside of your frame after a few hours riding...too hot to touch. Much hotter than the temps used to powder coat.

i powder coated my frame over a year ago and have been running it with no problems

all of our frames are powder coated from the factory

buell told me, they weld them, pressure test them, then powder coat them

buell also told me they would void the warranty on the frame if it was painted or powder coated

Now that's not suprising:D

I wonder if farting on the seat will void any warranties? [up]

According to Gran Stand Designs they are a sponsor over at badweatherbikers forums need to withstand 300* for 30minutes. I know b/c I was asking about getting my plastics powdercoated. I don't think that temp for that long would do much if any harm to the frame of an XB as the engine reaches what 260 easily? probably more.
