Yeah I know, yet ANOTHER post about someone modding their bike. But so what? Kinda got tired of staring at all the grainy, out-of-focus, cell-phone quality pics & decided to take some with a decent camera (Nikon D90) for everyone to see.

So here we go!

So I got the big three mods done already: fender eliminator, exhaust, & H.I.D. lights. I've got some more up my sleeve so I'll put them up as they happen.

Fender eliminator: I got mine from Jardine, $80 delivered. Here are some before & afters:

Now onto the exhaust. I got the Jardine RT5 carbon fiber. IMO it is the best looking and sounds crazy. Also got it for a ridiculous price of $446 delivered!!! from biohazardcycles.com.

You must have some really low miles on that thing! Personally, I'd break in the bike before putting an exhaust on it. It looks good though!

I dunno.... boat anchor? haha, that thing weighs almost 25lbs!!! I'll prob. keep it around should I sell the bike one day and someone wants the OEM setup.

You must have some really low miles on that thing!

Just under 300. Thought about that actually. But I figured I'm at least half way there so what the heck. Plus I wanted to match the sound to the aggressive look. The "lawnmower" wasn't cutting it.

So here are the pics of the H.I.D. lights I put in. Got the 55w slim ballast setup from DDM tuning. Couldn't believe how affordable it was ($70). Did both low & high beam. Wish I would've taken pictures of the whole process, but I was too anxious to have it done. One of my questions was regarding the wiring (which is + or -) so for those that may come across the same dilemma, here ya go: Low Beam: Negative (-) is BLACK, positive (+) is BLUE. High beam: negative (-) is BLACK/RED, positive (+) is WHITE. Also, as far as fitting the bulb in the high beam housing, all you have to dremel is the black receptacle for the high beam bulb, not anywhere on the headlight housing. So all you would need to replace if going back to normal bulbs is that small cheap replaceable piece.

Decided to go with 6000k. Was a toss up between that & the 5k & am really glad I went with the 6k. Same color as my xenon lights on my BMW. Gives it that distinct hint of blue that is related to H.I.D. lights. (Looks a lot bluer in the pics than in person, kinda got it in last pic.) What a difference! (Super hard to photograph light, exp. when it is as bright as these!!!)

Maskido, I ordered my HID from DDM right after I saw your pictures. Thanks. Do you have any difficulty on installing the HID - I'm just doing the low beam. Any hint or special procedures you can tell me before I start? Thanks.

Maskido

Do you have any difficulty on installing the HID - I'm just doing the low beam.

Just the low beam? Nope. It is THAT easy. Couple things:

- Having no instructions or reference to work from, I removed the headlamp housing from the bike so I could have it on my workbench & figure stuff out. In order to do so, you'll have to cut a zip-tie bunching all the wiring together to disconnect the headlight connection. (In hindsight, I could've done the install without this step, but it's always nice to have the room and freedom from things hanging down.)

- See the above post if you have any questions regarding polarity (+ or - of the wires.)

- The bulb protector (clear housing): Top part spins off, the bottom you'll have to cut/break to remove from the harness (DO NOT TOUCH BULB WITH BARE SKIN.)

- The only cutting required of the bike components (other than a zip-tie) is the circle cut-out on the weather proof housing. Just cut along the circles edge in the middle of the piece. You'll see what I mean. Make sure to use a super sharp razor & it'll be clean.

- I stuck the ballast (w/ provided double sided tape) above the headlamp, below the windscreen, on the left hand side. There is plenty of room, plus the other side is available should you install the high-beam.

Again, the job is super easy. The above are just small things that will make it go even smoother. Once you get into installing the high-beam, that's where I had to scratch my head a lil to figure out how the bulb was going to stay in the holder (oddly, it has a different mounting method. Hard to explain but once you'll see it, you'll know what everyone keeps talking about.)

Feel free to ask any questions. Have fun!

Oh yeah,

One thing I overlooked and have yet to do is replace the little center light that is wedged between the low & high beams:

(From the Owners Manual)
Bulb, running lamp part #53436-97 5watt 0.37amps

It detracts from the overall look due to its dingy yellowish color. I'll prob either unplug it or try & find a replacement. Even considered what it would look like if I threw in a RED bulb to accent the red on my bike... but dunno if that would look cool or dumb in contrast to the bluish hue of the 6000k bulbs. Won't know til I try.

And for the next mod: Custom Key! Been wanting to do this ever since I've known that they make these. It ended up bigger than I had envisioned, but in all honesty I wouldn't have it any other way. Anything smaller would have been swallowed up by the bike. Not really a key you throw in your pocket & forget about... but with a key this cool, why wouldn't you want to leave it out on the table?

Anyways, I got this at HARDCORE-KEYS (http://www.hardcorekeys.com) for $35 delivered & recommend them HIGHLY. I have yet to get it cut (they offer free key cutting if you mail them a spare key & they mail both back) but should be done today. As far as customer service goes, I had a question & received a response via email & phone call by the owner immediately! Spoke to him & he mentioned that they are updating their site so new stuff is on it's way along with their already badass selection. Anyways, here are a few pics. I like!

Decided to do a little cleaning up... a.k.a. Debadging the bike. Apart from the Buell logo on the air cleaner, I was tired of looking at the stickers all over the bike. Don't need decals to let me know what bike I have... plus if you can't figure that out by looking at it, well, then that's a different story.

Anyways, bike looks much cleaner now IMO. Take a look:

Nice pics Maskido. Thanks! Despite the negative reviews, I still think the Jardine is the best looking slip-on for the bike.

I never considered HID lights. Now you have me thinking...

Acepilot...what spiderweb cracks? Being color molded plastic with lots of flex, I wouldn't expect any unless your plastics became brittle due to heating or something. I haven't heard of that happening yet.

Oh, and the skull key cracks me up. I would get a chuckle every time I rode it.

Hi I have a CR I just orderd the HID kit for the high and low light could you tell me a little more info on what is required to do the high beem side, did i read it right that you modify the plug for the light? any help is apreciated I was involved on doing the low side on a friends bike and that was a pice of cake

Maskido
03-26-2010, 07:09 AM
Yessir, hope I can explain this in text as I didn't take any pics during the modification process. Also this is not the definitive way of doing it but its how I did it & after several hundred miles, still works as it should.

When you get to the high beam side of the light, you'll notice the piece that you twist out in order to remove the bulb. This piece is the one you need to modify. First, unplug the bulb, disconnect the wires & remove the metal spring clip/washer thing. You should be left with a circular "cap." What you need to do is dremel/remove enough of the center so that the bulb back can pass through it. The one thing that threw me off was how to get that piece around the back of the bulb so it can hold it in place. My solution? I scored one edge, snapped it, opened up the crack, fed the wires through and viola! The same process for the metal spring washer thing. Once you have done all that, just position the bulb in place and use that modified cap to hold the bulb in place. As far as the electrical connection, I replaced the stock terminals with ones that fit the DDM connectors.

Clear as mud? lol, like I said, hard to describe in text, but hopefully it'll make some sense as you get the parts in hand. And like I said, this is how I figured out how to do it & it works 100% for me. Some others may have done it differently. Oh well, no skin off my back. Ultimately, all you're really modifying/cutting is that plastic backing piece that prob cost's a couple bucks. So even if you mess up, it’s a cheap mishap.

I should be receiving the 194 led bulb to replace the stock running/parking light any day now, so while I'm in there again, I may try to take a couple pics.

Feel free to ask any Q's and if anyone out there who has done this has an easier/better way to do this then feel free to speak up.

Good Luck!

QUESTIONS? PLEASE READ NARRATIVE, THEN ASK. :D

Useless Mirrors! Deer Antlers!!! Ugly Sticks!!! Whatever you call them, the stock mirrors are not only useless, but BF'ing UGLY!!!

Got my bar-end mirrors from ebay today; ITEM #250589193292 $19.99 special. Love them!

Would never have thought how big of a change these would make. The single best mod I've done to the bike that gave it such a more aggressive look. They fit like a glove & feel solid. Shipped from CHINA, arrived within a week?!

Install couldn't get any easier. Took off front cowling (two screws), unplugged stock mirrors, replaced cowling, unscrewed old mirrors, replaced stock mirror screws to fill in holes, removed end-caps, slid bar end mirrors in, tightened & done!

Here are the pics. Not the highest quality, was rushed due to the thick storm clouds looming on the horizon (it rains from time to time here in WA.)

Not sure why everybody complained about the holes left by the old mirrors. Just re-used the stock mirrors' bolts. Duh!

What you do with the turn led signals? I've been thinking about this mod, but debating if I should get the bar ends mirror from CRG and spend the money or buy the Chinese mirrors with less price. How's the quality? Thanks.

Well for an 1/8th of the price, they are great. No vibration, all metal & perfect fit. Can't comment on the CRG's just because i haven't seen them in person. I'm sure they are better quality? (the folding feature is kinda cool) but at $74.95 x 2 AND the adaptors + shipping.... I dunno. Would MUCH rather put that kinda money into a pair of Pazzo's. I say pay the $20 for the same pair I got and if you don't like 'em, then you're only down four Star-bucks mocha-frappe-whatever. To each his own.

As far as the turn signals, I haven't decided what I'm going to do yet. Right now I just simply took them off and placed them in my "pile" of extra Buell parts. If I decided to put signals back on, it would be extremely easy to do so. Right behind the headlight, on the side, is a empty spot where you could put any one of the million led lights available on line. I might opt to do that, but it would have to be something that flows with the "minimalist" theme I am trying to go with. Happy decision making!

Bike looks real good. I'm currently debating between this bike or an XB Lightning.

how hard is it to remove the stickers and badging? how did you do it? i want to get mine looking nice n' clean too

Stickers just require a bit of heat to get off. May be a bit of glue residue left to clean afterwards but no big deal. Reflectors on fork are also just stuck on. I just twisted mine and theycame right off.

Yeah I just used my girlfriends hair dryer to warm em up. Then they just came right off with no residue. As far as the reflectors, like phazernut said, just twist them off. They're stuck on with some double sided tape.

Thought I'd chime in on the bar-end mirrors. I installed the inexpensive ones on my CR recently. With the clubman bars, you have to increase the depth of the counterbore in the end of the handlebars. With a 3/4" drill bit, it's not that hard, but takes a lot of patience to avoid ruining the bars. Once installed, I've not had any issues with the mirrors. For turn signals, I ordered a second set of rears and installed them in the headlight surround for a clean stock-like look. You can see that stuff along with the LP bracket I designed and a friend helped me fabricate & powder coat in the pic's below.

So is still too cold to get rid of your chicken strips or do you have another excuse?

I'm going to assume your post was all in good fun. So yes, it's still too cold here... yesterday was a frigid 85 degrees. I've not had a lot of time to get out to the nice roads. They're a trek where I live. Almost all the riding since getting the bike has been commuting - on straight highways. There is one little left-hand turn in my neighborhood though. So as you can see the left side of the tire isn't quite as bad as the right. I am looking forward to more twisties though. In fact, my brother and I are trying to plan a trip down through TN & NC on all the great roads there.

Also, for anyone that's interested: When you remove the mirrors from the CR, there's a plug from the XB9R/XB12R you can use to fill the hole left behind. I ordered a set from my dealer for about $2. I think they look nicer than the mirror's bolts.

So is it just me, or when these things start getting more streamlined with things like the mirrors, and the stickers come off.... they start looking like a cylon raider?

After goggling cylin raider I would have to say I don't think it looks like the ship but I may be missing something
