My buddy has a very similar issue on his 05 XB9Sx. We have traced the wires in the head unit and checked the speedo, also, but haven't found any irregularities. Please let us know what the problem is...
Before you take the bike out again, apply a good wax coat to it. It prevents water spots and helps in taking the dirt off. Then, you reapply the wax occasionally, after a cleaning.

I'm sure the bracket wouldn't be hard to machine out, so long as you design your own. Have access to caad software or a machinist? I think the forum may be working on stuff like this right now:

Rear hidden caliper bracket is sold at ASB only (unless you find a used one). Their ref. number is #9254. Do you have the correct caliper and brake line?
All of this would be easy (and fun) to draw up in caad, but the problem is in stuff like patents. If I remember correctly, there was a guy who was machining the hidden rear calipers and was contacted...
