Well, I'm sorry to hear this but, now you can rebuild it better and f you get some beer, Cooter will come over and Install the coils for you.

Wouldn't the crank be more of a thumping sound ?

Have you ruled out a stuck or collapsed hydraulic lifter ? We used to pour some tranny fluid into the oil res. to unstick them, most times it worked.
