fill the holes you drilled with some clear silicone so water can't infiltrate ;)
I just picked up this 2003 Buell XB9S on Monday.
Yesterday I took the tail piece to work and hacked on it.
I kept the turn signals for now. It's pretty bad around here, and I want drivers to clearly see where I am going.
I was going to make a plate light, but when I went to put my tail light back in, I noticed that the bottom part, below and behind the red part is already clear!
I was going to cut a slot in the aluminum, but I didn't have the stuff at home to do it, so I just drilled 2 holes for now.. it works :)
Anyway, here's how it turned out.
(Yes it does/did need a tire, I rode it to work today and had one put on at lunch)
and here is the light holes.. I will open them up and clean it up a bit later.. it looks red from the light coming in the tail, but it's a clear lens.

The holes are only in the aluminum.
The taillight is still sealed and untouched.
The holes do not go into the plastic taillight housing
looks like that bike has been droped b4 , the header pipe has a nice ding in it.
All other things aside, you need tires!
Yes, the bike has been down, (not with me yet)
There is a ding in the pipe and there was a scuff on the passenger foot peg too.
As I said above, I got new tires already :p
