Thread: How hard is it to replace the drive belt?

  1. #1
Mine just snapped. Had to order one from the local HD dealer. Will take about a week to get here. I've never taken the wheels off the bike . . . is this a difficult job, best left for the pros, or can someone who's halfway decent with a wrench do it no problem?

    Thanks

Good to hear. This has not been a good couple of weeks for my Buell.

Anyone know if there is a "how-to" write up on that? I did a search but didn't see one.

I guess I was lucky that it snapped about a half mile from home.

Except that I live at the top of a hill.

Luckily a bicyclist stopped and helped me push it up the steepest part.

Piece of cake did cherry's in 15 minutes.
Remove 3 allens in peg support bracket.
Remove front belt guard ( be sure u don't pinch wires when you put it back on)
Remove access leg from swing arm 4 allens.
Put belt on front pulley and over tensioner
Line belt on rear pulley starting at the bottom carefully line belt and rotate wheel forward.
Work belt on take care not to rip it on the edge.
    Reinstall parts and ride :)

I did this on a rear stand turning the wheel by hand

I was planning on doing the rear break pads since I'm going to have it apart. Didn't think about the bearings. What's involved when you say doing the bearings? Does that mean replacing them, or just greasing them up?

RT, thanks for the step by step. Definitely makes it sound easier than it looks.
