Hey guys
I have a 2010 XB9SX, and just yesterday rolled over 5000km on it. The factory exhaust is rusting to hell! Up at the front around where the headers join, and all around it at the back it's rusting really bad. Is this normal?

where are you from infantry?
Ontario, Canada...
My bike lives outside, but always has a cover on it. Was kept in a heated garage over the winter.
that might explain it,get them coated next winter
yea, I was gonna say that sounds like a salt thing
Here are some pics...
Salt seems pretty weak to me... I don't ride it in the snow FFS. Lol.
From the pics to me it looks like an issue with the metal. If it was due to salt I would think it would be a more random thing... This seems to be in sections.
def needs some kind of coating on it, if they've put salt down at any point and it hasn't had a chance to get thoroughly cleaned off, I've heard of it happening, that's why I mentioned it
I also have a 2010 XB9SX. I checked on mine after reading your post, and I have rust on my muffler too.
Not quite as bad as yours in this next shot.
This shot really shows how the end is in such bad shape compared to the rest of the muffler.
The last photo is interesting. If it was caused by salt or something like that, why would it look so new in the front & middle, and so old on the end?
I remember Buell had some problems with this a while ago. I thought they fixed it on the 2008's and earlier. I'm going to talk with my Buell-friendly Harley dealer and see what they say. I hope they can replace the exhaust muffler under warranty.
It's got 23,000 miles (37KMs), ridden almost every day, rain or shine, hot or cold. Parked outside in the shade during business hours and parked in a garage at night.
those are the hottest points on the stock pipe, also water collects in both those places (down the header and from the rear tire) and many bike covers lead to water condensation in moist climates which could lead to further rust with the pipe heating and cooling.
I would get it ceramic coated and the issue will be solved
