Big differences in the crank and oil pump
my bike is a 05 xb12r,I was thinking of buying a spare motor in cse mine goes bad someday.
I knoticed the timing cover is different on the thunderstorm moter ,what else is different? would it be worth switching over?
Big differences in the crank and oil pump
I don't think there are any mounting/size differences between the 2, I do know the newer motors have some better stuff internally, from the trannies all the way to the heads, but I'm sure someone with a little more experience will chime in if I'm wrong
If you want to do a engine swap you would need a new voltage regulator, main wiring harness, throttle body, ECM, swingarm, oil cooler and oil lines, it's honestly not worth the money. My total investment after all brand new parts was $5200
Why does the swingarm have to change?
The oil lines are different.
The location of the oil lines changed and the type of oil lines. Before you had to unscrew the lines and now they are quick connect where all you do is remove a clip and the lines pull out.
so, custom lines with matching fittings for each end might be cheaper?
The time and money wasn't worth trying to find someone to custom make 5 different oil lines the 3 to the swingarm and the 2 to the cooler. I just picked up a new swingarm through ebr.
They're all "thunderstorm" motors....
You have to remember that thew newer motors (2008+) use Buell's DDFI3 fuel injection system as opposed to the DDFI2 system in previous years. The primary difference is the ECU and crankshaft position sensor changed to a camshaft position sensor. The TPS and (IIRC) O2 sensor --lambda sensor-- are also different. If you were to swap the motors, you'd need more than just new oil fittings; you'd have to change the ECU and many of the primary sensors...
