Thread: Static timing, how to check/set?

  1. #1
OK, have searched here, google, and my service manual. I can find NOTHING on HOW to check/set the static timing. Am I retarded? Blind? Have no f'ing clue what I'm talking about?
I am getting ready to do my first computer to bike connection (ecmspy) and from what all I have seen, TPS reset 1st, check/set static timing,...............CRAP! LOL! TPS reset I'm clear on.
Any help, links, videos, what page to look on in the service manual, really any thing at this point would help

This is from the ecmspy tuning guide.

    Checking the Static Timing
Before spending time on your fuel map, it is wise to check the static timing on the engine. This is done by slowly rotating the engine, whilst watching the Cam Position Sensor on the Diagnostics page.
Raise the back wheel off the floor!
    Remove Timing inspection plug
Put bike into 5th gear to ease fine turning of the engine
    Raise side stand
Select Diagnostics page in ECM Spy and connect to the ECM.
The CPS value should be 0 or 5, depending on which cylinder is due to fire next. If it is on 0, go to next step, if on 5, rotate backwards until the CPS changes to 0, then follow the next step.
Rotate the rear wheel in a normal/forwards direction until the timing mark is just visible on the left side of the timing inspection hole.
Rotate the wheel very slowly until the CPS value in ECM Spy increases to 5. This is the exact point of firing.
Now check the timing mark inside the inspection hole. If it is exactly central all is good, if to the left, then the timing is advanced, if to the right of the hole, it is retarded.
If the timing is not correct, follow the instructions in your service manual to correct, or get it sorted by a competent Buell mechanic before adjusting your fuel maps.

This is from the service manual

    CHECKING STATIC TIMING

    NOTES
    â—
It is not necessary to remove the spark plug to determine
TDC compression stroke of the front cylinder in the following
    procedure.
    â—
Do not remove the timing inspection cover to check the
static timing. If timing must be corrected, the inspection
    plate will then be removed.
    1. Raise rear wheel using a lift or jacking point. Tie down
    motorcycle for additional support.
    2. Remove timing inspection plug.
    3. Place transmission in 5th gear.
    4. Raise sidestand.
    5. Connect Digital Technician to data port on motorcycle
and select the Static Timing procedure screen.
    6. Turn on ignition and move handlebar stop switch to the
run position. Listen for fuel pump cycling to confirm ignition
    is active.
    7. Turn or gently bump the flywheel in a forward direction
using the rear wheel. Position the flywheel TDC mark at
the very left edge of the inspection hole.
    8. If the engine is coming up on the compression stroke for
the FRONT (correct) cylinder, the screen will be displaying
LOW - 0 volts with timing mark at left edge of window.
    9. Gently bump flywheel forward in tiny increments.
    10. See Figure 1-47. If the static timing is correct, the screen
will switch to HIGH - 5 volts at the precise moment the
timing mark exactly centers in the inspection window.
    11. If engine is coming up on the compression stroke for the
REAR (incorrect) cylinder, the screen will be displaying
HIGH - 5 volts as timing mark is just coming into view at
left edge of window and will switch to LOW - 0 volts at
same point as the timing mark continues through the
window. (If this is observed, turn flywheel forward one
revolution to bring engine to compression stroke for front
    cylinder.)
    NOTES
    â—
If timing mark check point is overshot, bump flywheel
backwards till TDC mark is at left edge of inspection window
and repeat test bumping flywheel in forward (normal)
    direction.
    â—
Never confirm timing while bumping flywheel backwards.
This will give you an incorrect reading.
    12. If timing is correct, install timing inspection plug and
    tighten to 120-180
    in-lbs
(14-20 Nm). If timing is not correct,
see ADJUST TIMING in this section.

    Hi Jason,

I am currently trying to adjust my static timing on a buell ive just bought and in your video it shows an older version of Ecm spy.
Im currently running version 2.0.32.2 and cant find the cam position screen displaying the 0 and 5 to differentiate between the front and rear head.
Since your video was posted some time ago im guessing youve upgraded to the current version if Ecm Spy, do you know where i can find the camp position screen within the program (ive not found the ecm website very helpfull on where to find it)

    any help appreciated

    kind regards

    Phill
