Firefighter: Thanks for the input. You've made some good points but let me attempt to explain our design.

I agree. In the pictured design of the timing cover slider, the small bolts would likely shear off during an impact. In our design, the screws don't do much of the work. Our part will be made from Delrin (as opposed to aluminum) to absorb the impact and utilizes the original structure and geometry of the case to support it and keep it in place.

The problem in utilizing the 3 screws you mentioned is that they are relatively in line with one another. You get a significant amount of strength from working in triangles so a bracket in that area would not be too useful.
