Wheel bearings

I tried searching but it seems like no matter what I type in the search bar the same threads come up...

I recall reading about old style faulty wheel bearings, that were a certain color. My bike has red wheel bearings, are these the older faulty kind or am I ok? I am going to change them in about a year (~3k miles or so) but want to wait as I will need tires then also and will powder coat the wheels. Only want to do it once.

At one time there was a correlation in the color of the seals in the bearings, but that was only the OEM ones, black and orange, don't remember which is which, but you say yours are red, that tells me they are after market anytway, even those don't have a very long life expectancy, just be sure to keep an eye on them

Thanks. Maybe mine are orange....I'll look closer tonight. So is orange ok, and black bad?

I'd bet mine need replacing although I haven't felt or heard anything weird, but the bike wasn't extremely well taken care of. Hopefully I can go the next year and not have issues.
