Thread: Broken Exhaust Stud/Head Removal

  1. #1
I know that there are a bunch of threads on this already but I cant find any steps on how to remove the head?
I got two broken studs and dont think I trust myself to drill them out so I would prefer to remove it and take it to a machine shop. Can somebody give me the steps for it (and pics would be great too!)

so you just want the steps to take the head off?

    start by removing your frame.

    start

take the rocker cover bolts out

    inside the rocker

    Remove head bolts

    Lift off the rocker

    lift off the head

repeat for other side, This also assumes the headers are off. The intake gaskets will stay attached to the head, I suggest removing them for re-installation.
I had also already taken off the engine mounts and coil mount so those directions are in the red circles, the arrow points to one not in the picture.

    Front or rear?
If its the front and you have small hands, you can just tilt the motor remove throttle body and exhaust 13 bolts later you will have the head off.
If its the rear then it would be best to remove the frame. Which is a real easy thing to do too.

Look at the wolf man go...
The front head comes off the same, minus the head temp censor wire.

if you remove the pistons from the cylinders it is best to do new rings and hone the cylinders. if your bike is relatively low miles id suggest sliding the piston down just far enough to pull the wrist pin and leaving the piston rings alone. for your gaskets use aftermarket steel gaskets for the base and head. i use cometic and have been happy with them.

I think there is little chance of warping the heads on these but in the manual there is a sequence to the head bolts for removal. wolfo's advice combined with the specifics from the manual will get the job done.

He just wants the head off, I just took it a step further. If you loosen the pressure I was always told to replace the base gasket so you don't have an oil leak, that's why I went further.
