damn joel...i thought i kept my Buells clean. wow! :D

mr. fantastic: be sure when you install new muffler that if you use the stock clamps for same, that you snug them up, wiggle muffler, snug again, start and heat cycle and quick ride, let it cool down and tighten one more time. they always seem to need this.

Problem in having is the nuts are directly pointed at the pulley. I don't see any way possible to get at them with out removing the pulley. Can the pulley be removed without removing the back wheel?

Mine stay in the stock position and I have never had to remove the tensioner pulley in the countless times that the muffler has been removed. You need a wobble adapter, deep well socket, and extension.

yes it can be. see below.

you can do what jesse suggested with a series of 1/4" drive wobble sockets or universal joints in conjunction with the deep well 7/16th inch socket you'll need to drive the nuts on and off. however......let me make another suggestion which is how i tackle the rear stock muffler clamps which by the way.....have the threaded studs and nuts pointing towards the belt tensioner pulley FROM THE FACTORY. do this:
remove rear axle hex cap pinch bolt
loosen rear axle PRECISELY 21 TURNS......NO more.
now remove belt tensioner pulley pair of 9/16th inch hex nuts and flat washer behind each nut
wiggle tensioner pulley to loosen it up and remove
now you have clear access to rear clamps. takes maybe 7 minutes to do the above.
