Thread: Total Amateur Move + Questions - Wheel Removal For Tires

  1. #1
    Hey fellas,
so I was readin' away in the manual about pulling the wheels off to take down to the shop to get my tires mounted. ordered some Metzeler M5's from Revzilla. my first time doing any major maintenance on this bike, so it took me a while and wasn't quite as smooth as I expected.

    1. I hate these Torx screws. Am I alone in my disdain for them?
    2. The idler pulley was a bi+ch to get off. First time, and I think it was excess loctite from the mounting studs. I did loosen the axle.
    3. Rear axle pinch bolt - it's a 3/8" hex. Do we have a mixture of metric and standard, or have I just not noticed that my metric hex tools don't fit quite right?
    4. Am I the only one who's scraped his front wheel spokes with the caliper (despite the warning in the manual) while removing the front wheel?
    5. We don't need to pull our brake rotors and belt drive when getting tires put on, do we? Harley dealer?
    6. Do they need our axles for balancing?

#4 was the amateur move referenced in the title, btw. #$%@*!

No you don't need to pull the rotor(s) or drive belt pulley.

No they don't need the axles.

What torx bolts did you have to remove to remover the wheels?

I didn't remove the idler when I did my belt. It's a bit of a PITA, but probably no worse than removing the idler.

blue painters tape on the spokes works great.
