Finally got to the 20W60 change this weekend. Good thing too, I got up on Sat at 0630 to beat the heat and it was already 85*! This is my second XB but it's been 8 years since I sold my first... this was my first oil change on this one. I had forgotten how frustratingly inaccurate the fill level is on the oil res. Unlike 8 years ago, I can now afford to do things right... so I had the torque wrench, loctite, new o-rings, etc all on hand to do everything to spec.

Went for a 20 mile ride in the early afternoon with an ambient temp just over 100*. The engine seemed to be running smoother than before at these temps and the fan ran for shorter durations.

I'll be changing the primary to Redline 75w90 this weekend and I'll report back on that.

Don't torque your oil drain plug to manual specs. You will strip the threads.

I'm in Texas and switched from Mobile 10W50 to Redline 10W60 a few weeks ago and it has made a noticeable difference with temperatures in the 80-95 degree range. Been datalogging and when I compared 10W50 to 10W60 on same ride to work and similar ambient temperatures my 04XB12S was running around 10-15 degrees cooler with less fan running. Plan to continue to use it during summer months then go back to 10W50 for winter.

Stripping the drain plug? Is this a documented issue or anecdotal? The owners manual says 29-34 ft-lbs while the service manual says 26-29 ft-lbs. I used 27. I'd wager anyone who stripped their plug or drain didn't know how to use their wrench... assuming they targeted 27ish. These numbers are out of the 2007 books, maybe it's changed.

O it's documented my friend.... You'll get through about 2 oil changes before you strip your drain if you torque down to 29- 34ft-lbs.

IDK what the best thing to do at this point would be. I guess just hope its not stripped, and don't torque it down with your next oil change. If it is stripped, then time-sert it. Pain in the ass, but once its done its good to go.

the threads won't "self-strip" as installed but if it instills piece of mind for you then get an assistant and a fresh drain plug O-ring. place perfectly clean drip pan under the drain....remove plug...cover hole with finger...give drain plug to assistant and have him/her install new O-ring onto drain plug....reinstall and tighten by hand. forget all this torque-wrench stuff. whatever oil drips in to pan can be used to replenish swingarm reservoir. that is if pan is perfectly clean to start with.

Okay - wish I had found this thread three days ago before doing my first oil change on the XB....

Lunaticfringe - if we've already torque'd the bolt to service manual specs, is it fine to just leave it that way until the next oil change and then just hand-tighten from that point on? I'm assuming that's what you mean when you say the threads won't "self-strip" - but I want to be sure.

Frustrating to read about this now vice before I got the bike - don't want to be fixing threads in the first few months of owning the thing - especially given that I'm a stickler for following the service manual just to avoid this kind of stuff.
