I'll give you a write up when I get home yodazzz.
None of this stuff is really hard if you're paying attention and have the wiring schematics.

yes, i did see the sure shift, but the sureshift is about $160 and shipping is not even included from germany. Its more than what im willing to spend right now on that feature. Btw, the M-Lock looks pretty sweet from those guys too and I think someone in this forum had it installed. That might be my next investment.....

wolfo...looking forward to hearing from u.:D

A good write up on a DIY project unit that is specific to our XB's and costs pennies on the dollar compared to a purchased unit would be GREAT.

Okay so basically it's like this

You splice into the wires that run to your gauge cluster.

Black to black, they are both ground #13
Red to orange/White, Wire the hot wire (red) into the ignition wire for the gauges
Yellow to Pink, Tach pulse (pink) goes to it's own wire in this case it was yellow so it can read the tach input
Green to White, Speedometer also has it's own wire, it is green, to be able to read the speedo input and calculate gears
Brown to tan/yellow, The neutral light is wired into so that the unit can tell when it should not be calculating during it's learning mode.

Then there is a white wire that you touch to a ground in order to put it into learning mode and cycle through the gears to set it up.

Yes it was an ebay unit I used here, and they should come with an install paper that tells you if the wires are different.

Save your money and learn to read your tach and speedo to know what gear your in.

On my 2009 XB12Scg, the following is what I go by:

    25MPH - 2500RPM = 2nd gear
    35MPH - 3500RPM = 3rd gear

And so on...of course it's not SPOT on speed/RPM wise, but very closely matching needles on the gauges.

So, by going by that and having increased speed and RPMs, after a while you will learn what gear you are in just by looking at the two.

S'pose it deppends on your definition of fun...If it's figuring out a redundant solution to a non-problem, then making a gear indicator for an XB sounds like all kinds of fun! If just riding is how you define 'fun', then maybe not so much... :D

It was as cheap as buying a new ignition ans I don't have to worry about leaving my keys in the bike. Love it.
