I tighten mine as tight as I can with my bare hands and then give it a quarter turn with a wrench.
Over nine years and counting and I haven't had any issues.
I have heard varying opinions that the 06 service manual is way out of spec in regards to the torque specs on the oil plug on the swingarm.
I would prefer not to do what many others have done that followed the Manual, and strip the plug hole
any advice would be appreciated.

I shudder to imagine someone torquing a drain plug to 50 ft/lbs just because it was in the manual
DO NOT TIGHTEN OIL DRAIN PLUG TO TORQUE SPEC LISTED IN THE MANUAL. YOU WILL STRIP YOUR OIL DRAIN PLUG.
I stripped my drain plug doing that, I had to TimeSert. Good part is though that the timesert is stronger than the steel bolt in aluminum casing original pairing.
I am with chickn on this one as i do the same thing but at the end just give it 1 or 2 gentle/medium "thumps" with the heel of my hand on the end of the wrench just for that last "nip" as it were! If you are built like a brick sh1t house dont "thump" it too hard! lol
The definition of "torqued" is to tighten something so tight, it gets loose again...then half a turn.

There are two plugs, engine oil drain and primary oil drain, you need to tighten them both by hand with no tools. I would recommend to drill holes in the plugs and secure them with lock wire
