Weird heat phenomenon.
I installed a Drummer SS and IDS ECM. The 2009 XB 12Ss now runs hotter. When the bike is turned off, the fan continues to spin.
Previously, I had a Jardine and IDS ECM, the bike ran a little cooler and the fan NEVER came on when the bike was switched off.
Why would this be?

I believe on the later models there is more complicated fan controls commanded by the ecm. Possible different programming between the 2. Also tune may be a bit lean?

I bet most of this is due to differences in fan logic.

It should run when the engine is shut off.

I think it depends on the programming. My OEM ECM on my 09 firebolt would run the fan after I killed it but after the drummer SS install and a matching ECM from EBR it does not run after I kill it. It doesn't run much at all unless in traffic and the bike gets hot. Just my experience with the situation.

You guys are spot on.
It's either the fan logic/programming or the bikes running lean.
The only way to tell if it's running lean is to compare fuel maps side by side or inspect the plugs.
My guess would be that if the plugs look normal and the fuel maps don't give an indication of lean fueling, then it's the fan logic.
Yeah, I know;
I'm a genie-ass.

The EBR aftermarket ecms have a different cooling strategy. The stock ecms should run after shutoff while the EBR ecms do not. I had a Jardine exhaust with EBR ecm and the ecm came with a note that explained it that way.

I think it's a poor choice on EBR and IDS to get rid of the key off fan logic.

I would be curious what Erik Buell's reasoning was for the strategy change.

The fan on my 09 has never run after being shut down, but my 03 always did.
