At least pull off the primary and look behind the clutch basket at the end of the shift drum. You can see the pawls and springs and see how they operate. Rotate the rear tire slowly and move the shifter through the gears, at least you can eliminate the possibility of it being something externally fixable before you commit to splitting the cases.
