Man I wish we had gas stations around here like that.

The only place we can get C12 race fuel (110) octane is the local circle track or the drag strip. The best we can get at the pump is 93... so that is what I run.

I run 93. But more importantly I run 93 octane that contains no ethanol. Almost ALL name brand gas stations you go to run up to 10% ethanol in all their fuel. Look around next time you go to fill up, some states make them post it.

I almost always fill up at a local mom and pops gas station here in town that refuses to pump ethanol in their gas. They also sell 102 unleaded(i think) and 110 leaded. Ask around u might find one yourself =P . But as said above unless my bike was pinging, or tuned for it, I wouldn't put that in.

On a side note, I was talking to a local guy who has his own Dyno, and he told me something I had never heard before. He says that new bikes are "Ping proof" as long as u dont change the spark plug wires. Something about sensors there that the bike can detect the ping and respond with correcting the timing automatically. Anyone else heard this?

I can get 110 octane a block away from where I work. But it's like $6/gallon.
I haven't brought myself to fill up at that rate. But I'd like to give it a shot.

If the octane only causes the fuel to burn more slowly, does that mean that there is no power to be gained by running a higher octane than your engine is tuned for? And could power be improved by running the lowest octane that the engine would tolerate? Faster burn=more power but higher heat? Slower burn less heat.Or am I just way off?

oka, I ran 110 octane in my honda crx race car, I tuned the timing and fuel pressure etc. for the best performance. High octane burns slower, but more complete. It only helps if your tuned for it.

I think Thaloc has the best argument for running a specialty octane. Ethanol.

    **** Ethanol.

I was getting 38-40 highway MPG in my commuter car a few years ago, and that was at 70-80mph average. When california started adding ethanol, my mileage dropped down to 32-35mpg... something about environment?

How can it be good for the environment if its causing me to burn MORE fuel to go the same distance?

When I ride down to dave_xb12r's place, for the motoGP weekend, I will be running straight 94 octane. I will post my mileage results here.

I usually use unical 76's 91 and get ~130 miles before my fuel light.

I dont mind ethenol because the 10% that is in the pumps here in oregon is made in oregon. So I might get less mpg, but its 10% domestic fuel.

It's not so much that it burns slowly as much as it's resistance to burn under higher temperature and pressure conditions. The resistance to burn prevents the fuel igniting before the spark plug sparks and the piston, valves, etc are in the correct position for combustion. Since it has a greater resistance to burn, running 110 in your engine designed for 93 will not burn all the fuel leaving deposits of unburnt fuel. You are correct in your assumption of using the lowest octane fuel tolerable to prevent knock. That is where the most power will be seen...
