Remove it/clean it (it's magnetic and will collect ferrous shavings), and check continuity in the sensor wire circuit first. I'd hate to buy the sensor if it's just a broken wire.
I just picked up a 2005 blast about a month ago and am working through and fixing the previous owner's upgrades/repairs. My next challenge is the Speedo/Odometer. I am getting power (backlight and all indicators are working) but it is not registering speed or tracking anything on the odometer. From my previous research, it looks like the most likely culprit is the Speed sensor. Is there any way to check the speed sensor before ordering and waiting for it to come in?
Thanks in advance for the help.
UPDATE:
I got a new speed sensor and my Speedo/Odometer is back up and working. thanks for all the feedback everyone.

Thanks for the tip. I will try that tonight. I did pull it out and wipe it down but didn't see any noticeable shavings on the outside of the sensor itself. I am hoping that it is just a short.
Put the Speedo in diagnostic mode (Hold the ODO re-set button and turn on the ignition), to see if theres any codes.
This should help you:

Ok, I am going to try this first.
Well... I dont know if the wiring on the speed sensor was bad BEFORE I checked.
But it is bad now.
Mistakes were made.
Mistakes are fine! Making the same ones more than once is the problem. LOL
HAHAHAhahaha
