Ok just changed the primary and engine oil... I put the recommended amount of oil in both holes.... but now I am wondering how to properly check the engine oil level... I realize its checked with the dipstick.. but do you have to thread the dip stick in then un-thread to check? do you just put the dipstick in without threading then check it? should the bike be on the side stand? or rear stand? should it be checked cold or hot?

    Thanks!

run the bike a good 10-15miles get the oil nice and warm and check it on the side-stand and tread the dipstick in when you check IF you decide to check it when it's cold I use this rule of thumb the oil just touches the bottom of the dipstick that way when it gets hot it usually runs in the middle of the checked area. As for checking the primary you need a stand but usually 1 full quart is fine.

So you check it with the bike on the side stand? I have been checking mine (09 12Ss) holding the bike up straight. That's what the dealer told me.

I went to the owner's manual on Buell's site for maintenance info on my '09. Says in here to check the oil level when it's on the side stand, and the crankcase level when the bike is level.

Crankcase level is checked while on the sidestand.(as per buell)

As long as it's in between low and high marks, the engine is getting what it needs, so even if it is on the low side of the ok range, the engine remains well lubricated. There's a technical term for this, but it escapes me.

Folks, I'm new to Buells having just bought an XB9SX. Can anyone tell me why the Buell has to be hot checked?
    Thanks
