how should you check engine oil?

Yeah Ive run olive oil since I bought mine, maybe a bit on the expensive side but them smell when the engine gets hot is way worth it.

What oil do you guys put in your primary?

The primary is sealed. There is no filler cap and therefore no need to ever change or check the oil.

Piss in it and then ride it like you stole it... That way if it starts leaking, you can literally say you rode the piss out of it...

Ooh... Reading this and having just changed mine for the first time, I may have overfilled it. It reads the middle of the third X when cold, but right at the full mark after warming it up a few minutes in the driveway... Should I drain a fee ounces before taking it for a ride and then check it again?
