Thread: Buell Xb12r DIY oil change

  1. #1
    Hi Guys,

I bought a 08 xb12r new a few months ago and just got railed for 308 dollars for a "check up" i.e oil change.

I am pretty mechanically inclined, i do all the work on my 04 roadstar 1700, i just didnt want to tear into this bike without knowing a bit about it.

Sorry for such a newby question but did anyone post a DIY oil change along with some fiter / oil suggestions?

I went through alot of the posts but there is way too much out there to navigate through.

Thanks Guys i really appreciate it.

Yeah, the search option on here is kinda hit & miss. Anyway welcome to the Forum and looks like Nub got you covered. The link he gave is for the priceless Service manual won't match you're model, but the basics will be the same. Also, Buell.com will let you access Owner's manuals.

I just changed the oil out yesterday. I run 20w50 Royal Purple Max Cycle in both holes(lol). Tho alot of people on the board rave about the Mobil 1 V-twin so I might try that out next time. Iv talked to quite a few Harley techs and they say there is no gain what so ever to switching to a 'high flow' oil filter. So I just stick with the $7 dollar buell oil filters.

Only tricky thing to the change really is that the oil plug is right over the stock exhaust outlet, so use tin foil, or cut the corner out of sammich bag or something so it doesnt pour all over your exhaust.

Other than that its really straight forward. 1 quart of oil in the primary. use 2.5 for the swingarm and oil filter. Fill the oil filter half up then put the rest in the swing arm.

    Good luck!

Try Amsoil MCV 20w50 or Schaeffer Supreme 7000 Synthetic Plus Racing Oil #705 SAE 20W-50, but you can't use the schaeffer oil in your primary/tranny.

I currently run Schaeffer in the engine, Amsoil in the primary/tranny, engine runs cool, minimal valvtrain noise due to the moly in the oil, and tranny is butter.

How do you guys feel about Pennzoil or Valvoline for motorcycle oils?

I use Mobil1 full synthetic 20-50w for air cooled v-twins (aprox 2.5qts) and a quart in the primary.
