sorry not boby, body
After recient demise of buell co. my head wanders to what if land about the future of parts availability for my xb12scg.Having the knowlege ,and being familliar with sportsters,I know engine parts probly wont pose a problem in my lifetime. My concern lies with the FI system which is the heart of all other electronic components. So I look to see ,what would I do in the event of say, need of a non available throttle boby?
sorry not boby, body
Slap on a carb, if **** really falls apart, then you can rip out 90% of the wiring and strip the bike to a truely naked fighter but maintain all the handling.
I myself am a big fan of the carb, enen considered top mounted zenith and webers of the volkswagon years past.Unfortunately ,the wireing would be the smallest barier.the ignition, fuell pump, fan, throttle mechanics etc ,all depend even functionally on the FI throttle body and its conection to the ecm all in place.for example, the ignition timeing is not manually adjustable.
I am just guessing:
Even if they are mechanically the same, the plugs will be in different places. The XR would have everything going behind it, and the XB will have everything going above it.
I wouldnt doubt that mechanicallt they are the same, though.
Get yerself a parts bike-or at least some of the crucial components -
The XR is really a hybrid of XL and XB... with some parts all it's own.
It's EFI is down-draft but with a smaller airbox volume and probably different throttle body and intake. BTW, it's the airbox volume that gives it less power than a XB12.
The crank pin is 1/4" bigger than XB, like stock XL's and the oiling is all its own.
And as far as all the other parts go (frame, forks, plastics, etc...), it has nothing in common with a XL.
I really like the bike but if your motivation is long term parts availability, I'm not sure it will be much better if HD stops making it soon.
Get yourself a wrecked XB, or two. You'll end up with enough parts to last your a long time.
