Wouldn't the open holes leave the possibility for rust to start forming? If so, what could be used to prevent/treat the rust? Keeping it away from water is kind of obvious but I live in the northeast, it's always humid, things are always getting wet. It's just not a good environment for a bike that I'm trying to keep "like new". lol. Thanks guys.

torreytyler, that's why I chose to put the bolts back in after I removed the brackets. you could put some kind of a never-seize or something in the hole if you really don't want to put the bolts back in but that stuff makes a mess & looks like $hit!

when I bought my '04 Bolt, it was missing the brackets (Prev-owner had removed them and lost 'em) there were no bolts or anything in there... I ebay'd a set of brackets and pegs... went to Lowe's and found the right size bolts and put them in with no issues. I have no idea how long they were out but I've had the seat fairing/cowling completely off and I can assure you that they do nothing but hold those brackets on.. there's no internal parts that they do anything for at all and after who knows how long that they were off there was no sign of rust inside the holes...

The rear bolts arent needed but should be put back in. I just took the rear bolts, cut them down some, and put them back in from the inside out to hold the battery tray down.

Hmmm. I guess I needta go look at the battery to see. If you want to just cover the holes, you can get various sized push-in plugs at an auto parts store to keep debris out. If you want to keep moisture out (assuming it's a dead-end hole), then use some silicone to hold the plugs in and seal it up.

You just need to put the 2 bolts and jam nut that secures the battery pan.
