I have no idea what a dealer would charge to replace a fork seal but I was quoted $300 (Australian dollars - approx $265 USD) for the dealer to replace the fork oil.
I decided to do my own and have done that several times now. I have also replaced the fork seals ('06 Uly) and that is isn't a massive job if you are confident doing mechanical work.
One thing that has been suggested over on Badweb is try sliding a piece of 35mm film up between the seal and the fork leg and to work that all the way around the seal. It is possible that a piece of the teflon bush coating has been caught between the seal lip and fork leg.
I found that my right seal was the first to go and I suspect the residue from the brake pads could be part of the different wear rate between left and right but that could also be a wild theory as well.
The seals themselves are very inexpensive (mine were about USD$6.00 ea) and depending on how many miles you have up it might be worth replacing the bushes while the forks are apart. There are some really detailed threads on doing the fork seals over on Badweb and I'm happy to provide any information to do them yourself.
If you are 'in-between' in mechanical confidence then an option might be for you to remove the forks and then take them to a specialist suspension company and have them replace the seal (and at least the oil on the other leg as well).
Forks are pretty easy to work on as long as you have some kind of stand for the rear wheel and a jack to lift the front up.
Yea, the right hand side goes out ages faster than the left because brake dust and flakes shred it apart pretty rapidly.
Oil and seal <$25 I think, a couple hours of work with some patience and you can have it fixed up in no time.
Any amount of oil leak can throw the behavior between the forks off, I would be somewhat reluctant to ride on them if I had any doubts.
I agree with everbody above, the fork seals are pretty easy to replace. I did my firebolt in a couple of hours and even made my own fork/spring compression tool out of a rachet strap. Do it urself, that what Buells are all about anyway. Since the dealers never really wanted to work on them anyway. Good luck
Thanx guys ur right it was 25 bucks for the seal Nd oil doing it myself wish me luck!!
Replace both sides. Usually if one leaks.. the other will soon follow.
Hey there, I am going to try to do my fork seals myself. I was wondering if anyone had taken any pictures along the way, or if there is a decent user tutorial (other than the shop manual).
Also, where are you all getting your seals from? The dealership?
