Sparkfun is a distributor, not a manufacturer. They sell modules from several different companies, some good, some bad.

The problem with the 3.3v chips is that the Tx/Rx at the ECM is still 5v. Even if you power it with 3.3v, the signal from the ECM will fry the BT module.

$50 is the average going price. I'll see if I can track down the cheaper ones and post a link.

I staged all lines 3.3 on the old chip. The third time. Some savy tech didnt seem to look at all lines voltage for me when I called a few times puzzled why they were dying. they were only looking at input. I stumbled into it by accident on a tech sheet they sent me in the mail with replacement order. every chip said sparkfun in the ic board. not a sticker applied. figured it was one of theirs that's all.

If I think of anything I'll email you Tim. or if i stumbe into something. mouser.com has amphoid plugs for the buell side. I buy bulk there 100/500 count. the only way to get the price down.

I ordered 2-3 of each piece and a pile of programmable voltage regulators for ~$15

I don't buy from retailers... I have contacts and production distributors that can get me samples for almost nothing

only problem is I'm waiting 15 days for the stuff to come in, but I've always received my items before from these guys

benefit of being in a large group of embedded systems and software engineers that have decades of experience and contacts each

I got some parts in, here is a picture

the black chip is a TTL to standard logic converter, so it changes the ECM output to 0-+3.3 instead of whatever form it may be in

and the green chip is a bluetooth module that costs about $18

the USB device is a bluetooth USB device I'm attempting to get a driver and transfer working with in order to make an even cheaper solution

Awesome! Thanks for taking it to the next level for us!

I was thinking of trying this:

You should be able to splice a standard serial cable into the Buell plug, and even power it directly without needing a voltage regulator. The OS is self-contained on the chip, so you shouldn't need any drivers.

Plus, it's only $60 and already packaged nicely.

    it works

Cost to build (prices based on USA parts, not cheaper alternatives like Hong-Kong):
RS232 TTL to Bluetooth controller: $18
    4 capacitors: $1
    RS232 voltage converter: $2
    Voltage Regulator: $2
Nice case to put it in: $4
    Wire/Solder: <$1
    Total: ~$27

took about 45 minutes for me to put together
note that I have awesome soldering skills and things of that nature

if built with Hong-Kong parts this might be as cheap as $20 even or so

Has anyone tried using the guts from a bluetooth headset? I know very little about the subject just figured I'd throw out an idea.

a bluetooth headset doesn't have a UART on it, which is the device used for serial interpretation (RS232 protocol)
